Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust

Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust Focused on rehabilitation of waterfowl and other avian species. The majority of birds coming in are orphaned ducklings. only 2500 teal left.

The Wellington Bird Rehabilitation Trust:

Founded by Craig Shepherd and focused on the rehabilitation of waterfowl, but also attends to seabirds and some other breeds of birds as required. These birds largely come from the SPCA and vet clinics, but we also get some from the Wellington Zoo, Massey University, and members of the public. We deal with over 1000 birds per year aside from our permanent

residents. Their time in care can range from just a few days to 6 months with the goal being to release them back to the wild as quickly as possible. A small number that are not releasable spend their days in our large outdoor aviary. Is part of the captive breeding programme for Brown Teal which are one of the rarest ducks in New Zealand with approx. So far I have bred four offspring which have now been released back into the wild. Through our work we have met many wonderful people and made some great friends through the birds that we care for. We are constantly amazed at the effort that people will go to to get their birds to us( with one having been sent 300kms!)

Craig Shepherd is current Chair of WReNNZ (Wildlife Rehabilitators Network of New Zealand) and has been both vice-chair and Chair of Wellington SPCA and a trustee for Native Bird Rescue (Wellington) Trust.

Candy the Canadian Goose carries the can for littering.
Today at WBRT we received a call for help from a distressed member of the public who saw a Canadian goose with its beak stuck in the top of a discarded drink can. We quickly arranged a volunteer to go into the stream and rescue the goose so we could take her in for care. We cut away the tear tab from the can to release her beak and Candy will now be calling WBRT home for a short while as we treat her with pain and antibiotic medications. As soon as the wound has fully healed Candy will be returned to the stream where she was found. Thanks to Sandra for alerting us to this poor injured goose and to Dave who carried out the rescue 😀😀. No thanks to whoever discarded the drink can into the stream ☹️☹️

**Community rehome** - 3 gorgeous geese. Currently located on the Kapitit Coast.

We have not met this trio but we have been asked to help them find a new pet only, not for eating or breeding home, where they can free range in a safe and contained area, with shelter, access to water, and can live their best life. This is what we have been told...

"In the attached picture, the goose on the left is the eldest (Mildred @10 years), the middle goose is 2 years old and named Ryaness, and the goose on the right hatched last year but has not been named yet. We would ideally like to keep them together. They become quite vocal when people are around but have shown no signs of agression, they are quite a freindly bunch. They are located just outside Ōtaki."

If you can offer these 3 a new forever home then please email [email protected] for more information.

This beautiful Starling fell victim to a cat attack 😞 Fortunately, the residents of the property were nearby and able to provide assistance. Presented to us in poor condition, we managed wounds, pain and the high risk of infection (cat saliva is toxic to birds). After a few weeks of rehabilitation and strengthening, he has made a full recovery and returned to his home 🫶.

Thank you to our followers for your ongoing love and support!
It helps our mission of providing avian wildlife with a second chance, they might not otherwise receive. 🥰

Gorgeous boy -Chucky Ducky, his sister - Sarah and mum - Junior are looking to settle in a forever home. Chuck is quite boisterous and would do better as the only male, unless integrating with others is closely monitored. Please let us know if you have room for these cool kids!
