CANZ - Composers Association of New Zealand The Composers Association of New Zealand is the association for all amateur and professional composers in New Zealand.

CANZ provides opportunities to composers through the Nelson Composers Workshop, the Asian Composers League and the International Society for Contemporary Music. CANZ also lobbies on behalf of its members to improve the situation for composers in New Zealand. CANZ contributes financially towards special projects, and awards two prizes annually. CANZ also produces two publications: Canzonetta, a bi-monthly newsletter, and Canzona, a retrospective yearbook.

Performance-ready parts due from the winning composer: January 25, 2027
World Premiere: March 12, 2027 — Merkin Hall, New York City

The winning work will be performed by Pegasus: The Orchestra under Founder, Artistic Director & Principal Conductor Karén Hakobyan and will be professionally audio and video recorded. The winning composer will receive permission to use the recording for professional and promotional purposes.

AWARD

1st Prize - $1,000 award, an award certificate, World Premiere performance and professional audio/video recording as well as up to $500 travel per diem* (if from out of state/country) to attend the World Premiere.

2nd Prize – $500 award, a performance of a chamber work during Pegasus’s 2026–2027 season (instrumentation/length to be discussed with the composer), an award certificate, and special mention on Pegasus’s website and concert program.

3rd Prize - $200 award, an award certificate and special mention on Pegasus's website and Concert Program.

The pieces for the following ensembles are eligible within this call:

1. Symphony orchestra a 2 (max: 2.2.2.2 – 4.2.3.1 – Timp+1 Perc – Piano – Harp – Strings).
Duration: up to 12 minutes

2. string orchestra (5/4/3/2/1) or string orchestra (5/4/3/2/1) and piano.
Duration: up to 12 minutes

3. ensemble of choice, ranging from 1 to 9 instruments, with or without electronics Duration: up to 10 minutes

Possible instruments: recorder, flute/piccolo/alto flute, oboe, clarinet/bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, guitar, harp, piano, harpsichord, accordion, percussion, soprano, mezzo-soprano, baritone, two violins, viola, cello, double bass.

4. harp, guitar, accordion, or a combination of these instruments.
Duration: up to 10 minutes

5. electronic compositions (tape music, stereo, file formats: wav, aiff)

The New Lexicon is an international research residency devoted to advancing philosophy of music composition as a rigorous field of inquiry. It convenes composers who approach composition not only as the production of musical works, but also as a mode of thought through which musical knowledge, value, agency, experience, and possibility may be generated, examined, contested, and reformulated.

Across four online seminars and a culminating public residency at Bled Contemporary Music Week, participants will articulate the philosophical premises of their practices, develop projects through critical exchange, and contribute to a shared yet plural vocabulary for thinking musical composition anew.

400 Euro early application participation fee, no application fee.
N.B website still states applications by September 15. Deadline has (to the best of my understanding) been extended to October 15, early bird deadline September 20.

For almost five decades our national choirs have benefitted from, and contributed to, the creation of new choral works in Aotearoa. On its 50th anniversary, Divertimento Ensemble is announcing an international call for young composers under 35 (at the submission deadline) to select five compositions for ensemble and for solo instrument. These compositions will be included in the Rondò 2027 season.

The instrumentation for this year’s competition is chamber music. The finalist works will be performed by L’Itinéraire from France at the final concert in Chengdu in late November 2026 and will be evaluated live by the jury.

1. There are no restrictions on nationality, region, or age. However, applicants must be registered students by the submission deadline. Non-students are not eligible to enter the competition.
2. Submitted works must have been composed within the last three years. There are no stylistic restrictions.
3. Works that have been publicly published or have previously won awards are not eligible.
4. Each applicant may submit only one work and must not enter under a pseudonym or under another person's name.
