Facing a cancer diagnosis is hard enough without the added stress of traveling far from home for support. That’s why for the last 15 months, Health NZ Registered Social Worker Haley Gerondis has been based right on the ground in Porirua, bringing vital oncology support directly to patients and their whānau.

By working side-by-side with incredible local partners like the Cancer Society Porirua | Te Puna Aroha, iwi, Māori, and Pacific providers, this collective waka is breaking down barriers to care. From conducting comfortable home visits to helping a recent Pasifika patient successfully navigate her treatment cycles with newfound independence, the impact of a consistent, trusted community presence is undeniable.

The success of this collaborative model is already paving the way for more local services, including future psychology clinics at Kenepuru Hospital to further reduce travel times for our community.

A massive thank you to Haley, the Cancer Support team, and all of our incredible Porirua community partners for putting whānau at the heart of everything you do! 🌟

Not all volunteering happens face-to-face.

Some of our volunteers support people affected by cancer through handmade hats, turbans and cushions, carefully created to provide comfort, dignity and care during treatment.

Every stitch is a reminder that someone is thinking of them.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the volunteers who share their creativity and kindness to help others feel supported 💛💙

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we want to shine a light on someone who quietly makes a real difference every week.

Every Monday from 1-2pm, Glenn volunteers his time at our Hutt Hub, guiding gentle yoga sessions that give people a chance to move, connect, breathe, and simply take a moment for themselves.

The feedback from clients says it all:
💛 "This was exactly what I needed today."
💙 "I sleep so much better after these classes."

We're also incredibly grateful to the wider AWHI community, whose koha classes helped fund the bolsters used in our sessions. That generosity has added even more comfort and support for those attending.

To Glenn and everyone at AWHI Yoga, thank you for sharing your time, energy, and aroha with our community. We're so grateful to have you alongside us.

Meet Terry, Marie and Jocelyn. For them, volunteering runs in the family, all three volunteer with us on the Kāpiti Coast.

Between them they drive people to treatment, support reception, tend the garden, and take time to listen. They came to it separately, for their own reasons, but the motivation is the same. "The people you meet are always so amazingly positive," says Terry. "You take a lot of courage from them."

More than 3,000 drives to treatment were provided by our volunteer drivers last year across the Wellington Division.

Behind every trip is someone giving their time to make a difficult day a little easier.

National Volunteer Week is here 💛💙

Ēhara tāku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.
My strength is not that of an individual, but that of the collective.

We couldn't do what we do without our volunteers.

Every day, people across our community give their time to support those affected by cancer. They drive people to treatment, help at events, prepare meals, sew comfort items, and so much more.

This week, we're celebrating them and sharing some of the many ways they help ensure no one has to face cancer alone.

Right now, Lindsay Gault is cycling around Borneo with a powerful purpose: raising funds to support people affected by cancer across our region.

Every kilometre ridden is helping to make a difference for local people and whānau navigating a cancer diagnosis.

We're incredibly grateful for Lindsay's dedication, determination, and generosity. If you'd like to follow his journey, read about the challenges and experiences along the way, or support his fundraising efforts, visit www.ride4cancer.nz.

Reminiscing on Relay For Life 2026; seeing collective support for our mahi, and the goal of $750,000 raised through our phenomenal community makes us very grateful.

To everyone who participated, donated and supported this event, thank you. Thank you for standing alongside cancer survivors, their carers, the support networks, and remembering those we have lost.
