Kua hinga tētahi tōtara anō i te wao nui a Tāne.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Whatarangi Winiata (Ngāti Raukawa).

Through his scholarship, writing, and leadership, Professor Winiata helped shape generations of Māori thinkers, educators, and leaders. His work challenges us to imagine futures grounded in our own values, language, and knowledge systems, leaving a lasting impact on Māori education, literature, and intellectual life.

At the Māori Literature Trust, we acknowledge his immense contribution to the growth and preservation of mātauranga Māori. His words and ideas will continue to inspire generations to come.

Moe mai rā e te rangatira. Thank you for the legacy you leave behind.

Haere, haere, haere atu rā.

E tangi ana te ngākau i te hinga o te pou nei o te ao Māori.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tā Hirini Moko Mead (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāi Tūhoe and Tūhourangi).

As a scholar, educator, writer, and advocate, Tā Hirini dedicated his life to sharing and protecting mātauranga Māori. Through his many books and publications, he opened doors for countless readers to engage more deeply with tikanga, te reo Māori, whakapapa, and the richness of our culture. His work has become foundational reading for so many of us, helping to strengthen our understanding of who we are and where we come from.

The impact of Tā Hirini's contribution to Māori literature cannot be overstated. His writing has guided students, teachers, researchers, writers, and whānau across Aotearoa and around the world. More than that, he helped ensure that Māori knowledge would continue to thrive, be valued, and be passed on.

We are deeply grateful for the wisdom he shared, the pathways he created, and the generations of Māori thinkers, writers, and leaders he inspired along the way.

Moe mai rā e te rangatira. Thank you for the stories, the knowledge, and the legacy you leave behind. Your contribution to Māori literature and te ao Māori will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Haere, haere, haere atu rā.

Kua hinga te tōtara i te wao nui a Tāne. Auē te mamae, auē te aroha. Moe mai rā, e te rangatira.
