🥳Today is UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities! 🥳 To celebrate WREMO is launching a new emergency preparedness guide, developed by and for disabled people.
Disabled people are often disproportionately impacted by emergencies. The guide and framework were co-designed to help disabled people plan in ways that reflect their strengths, access needs, supports and real-world situations before a disaster happens.
The guide is a New Zealand version of the Collaborating for Inclusion, Person-centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) Workbook, originally co-designed in Australia at University of Sydney, by Associate Professor Michelle Villeneuve and Collaborating for Inclusion.
The workbook is part of a wider framework of P-CEP. You can find out more about the original research, see the workbook and learn how it was codesigned and implemented in Australia here: https://collaborating4inclusion.org/pcep/
The New Zealand version has been adapted here in partnership with paid design groups of disabled people from across the motu. The project lead from WREMO, Renee Santos, is also part of the disabled community. Workshops will accompany the guide that focus on strengths, practical planning, and having the right conversations before an emergency happens.
This guide has had support from Whaikaha - Ministry of Disabled People and NZ Civil Defence . Work is now underway on a national version and alternate formats.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their lived experience, expertise and time to make this happen. Especially the national working groups, members of the regional pilots, People First New Zealand, Disabled Persons Assembly NZ - DPA, and the Laura Fergusson Trust.
With a consistent, disability-led, collaborative approach, this framework is the first of its kind to be adopted in Aotearoa New Zealand. It represents a step toward more inclusive, equitable and effective emergency preparedness for disabled people across the country
