What to do at the Mount while the Maunga and Hot Pools are out of action?
With Mauao out of action, there are still plenty of places around Tauranga where you can go for a nice walk or cycle or soak in hot pools.
Walks
Papamoa Hills is now open – it’s straight up hill, and not for those with dodgy hearts. The view from the top is worth the huffing and puffing to get there!
Marine Parade Take the coastal pathway from the eastern End of Marine Parade to Adams Ave at the base of the Mount. It is a good walk along the beach then back along the Boardwalk. With plenty of places for refreshments. Coffee cart at Hart Street, Tay Street Cafe, plus the large variety of cafes & Restaurants at the base of the Mount
Waikareao Estuary Walkway: a 9km loop track ideal for walking and/or cycling, All ages and abilities can enjoy the flat winding boardwalk. The popular Daisy Hardwick section of the walk is approximately 3km on the Western Side of this walkway.
Kulim Park to Fergusson Park 2.4km one way its an easy walk along the inner harbour, great for all ages and abilities. Great views to Rangiwaea and Matakana Islands
Hot pools
Fernland Spa: the iconic Fernland Spa is set amongst native bush. Only 5 minutes from central Tauranga or 15 minutes from the Trust’s units. The natural, non-chlorinated, mineral pools have been family-owned since 1968. They are especially enjoyable on a dark, chilly winter’s evening.
Welcome Bay hot pools: Also a 15 minute drive from the Mount, the Welcome Bay hot pools are mineral-rich and fed by natural geothermal springs. Here you can make a day of it by bringing a picnic and some sausages. Take advantage of the free the BBQ and park like surrounding
Baywave Aquatic Centre: Not a hot pools per se, but Baywave will keep the little ones occupied for hours with its wave pool, aqua play station and water slides. All this just a 7-minute drive from the Trust’s units, across the road from Bay Fair. Ideal on a rainy day.
