The rules around safety checking are changing on the 24th of October 2026, and you need to be prepared to comply.

These initial changes will change how you safety check new children’s workers who have spent more than 12 months outside New Zealand. The change now requires employers to obtain an overseas police check.

On the 24th of April 2027, these new changes will apply to your own existing workers.

How often do you review your fee schedule?

In ECC’s upcoming annual webinar, Simon will be joined by Todd Painter to discuss keeping your centre’s fee schedule up to date.

We’ll be looking fee management tools available on the top three SMS platforms and how to monitor them and Commerce Act requirements around trading.

We’ll also discuss how to keep your fee schedule simple and clear for parents, and how to deal with parents complaining about your fee schedule.

"EDIT – Please Read: ECC is NOT campaigning for the removal of Pay Parity. ECC fully supports paying teachers well to ensure that ECE remains a desirable career that provides world-leading early education for our tamariki. Our letter is intended to take the pressure off of the centres who are currently struggling to keep up with increasing wage costs without an increase to their funding. Without this request, we expect many centres to struggle to retain their teachers or stay open before an increase in funding is made available. This letter and the work of ECC has always and continues to be in the best interest of the sector, and by extension, children."

The Pay Parity Scheme is not sustainable, and we can't wait until the ECE funding review is complete for any changes to be implemented. This is what ECC wrote to Minister David Seymour in a letter sent last Tuesday.
