National Council of Women of New Zealand

National Council of Women of New Zealand The National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ) works toward a gender equal New Zealand. NCWNZ’s activity is diverse.

Established by suffragists in 1896, we work for gender equality across the political, social and economic sectors. We have around 290 member organisations, 260 individual members and 20 branches around the country. We make a difference by representing women’s voices and influencing key decisions and issues through research, discussions and submissions. We encourage and educate people on the need for action and what they can do. Locally, our branches make a difference for women in their communities through projects, events and advocacy. Globally, we assess and report on New Zealand’s progress toward meeting international agreements on women and girls, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. We support member organisations in the work they do through providing information, connecting them with others who can help and representing their activities in our advocacy. Visit www.ncwnz.org.nz to find out how you can support our work.

133 years ago, women changed New Zealand by demanding a seat at the table.🏆

They didn't politely wait their turn.

They organised. They disrupted. They challenged politicians. They made themselves impossible to ignore.

This Suffrage Day, honour the suffragists the same way they honoured each other: by showing up. 🙌

Learn the policies. Question the candidates. Vote like the women of 1893 are watching. 🇳🇿✅

And if a politician doesn't like being held accountable?

Tell them Kate sent you.

NCW celebrates Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2026 💜🪅

‘Toitū te tangata, Toitū te whenua, Toitū te Reo, Toitū nga Wāhine ki te ao’ translates to Uphold the people, Uphold the land, Uphold the language, and Uphold the Women of the World.

These maps spotlight our local branches set up in Tamaki Makaurau, Te Kūiti o te Puarangi, Kirikiriroa, Tauranga Moana, Manawatu, Manukau, Murihiku, Whanganui, Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai, Pōneke, Ōtautahi, and Ōtepoti, panning across Aotearoa. Each branch is an ecosystem of support, community, and equity in its own Te Reo Town.

We support this year’s theme, which focuses on Te Reo Towns. It is in the cities we live in and the towns we advocate and strive for, that help create a life of equity enjoyed by all. Through our strong ties to te reo Māori, we speak with clarity and demand equality across Aotearoa.
