Well... after recovering from all the doughnuts π©π, I can finally sit down and reflect on what was such a special day celebrating Cook Islands Constitution Day and the start of Cook Islands Language Week.
It was an honour to welcome Her Excellency Ms Kairangi Samuela, Cook Islands High Commissioner, and a representative from the Cook Islands Ombudsman's Office to celebrate with us.
We were also treated to a fantastic presentation by Flora Tupufia, who shared the history and significance of the House of Ariki, giving us all a greater appreciation of our traditional leadership and heritage.
One message from Her Excellency Ms Kairangi Samuela really stayed with us. She reminded us that when someone asks if you're a Cook Islander, don't answer, "Yes... but I'm also..." If Cook Islands blood runs through your veins, the answer is simply YES.
That message perfectly reflects what we're building at the Cook Islands (NZ) Society Wellington. A place where every Cook Islander belongs, no matter where they were born or where their journey has taken them.
One of the highlights of the day was showcasing the amazing work happening through our community workshops. From the powerful beats of our Rutu Pa'u drummers, our Ukulele Workshop performing our national anthem, our Reo KΕ«ki 'Δirani learners sharing language and games, to our Ura Fit dancer getting everyone moving. It was a true celebration of our culture in action.
These workshops have become so much more than classes. They're bringing our people together, reconnecting us with our language and culture, creating friendships, and building a place where everyone feels welcome.
A huge Meitaki Ma'ata to everyone who came along, volunteered, performed, baked, cooked, supported and celebrated with us. This is exactly the kind of community we're proud to be building together.
