Day 8

22 days to go until we move into our new Johnsonville warehouse!

It’s definitely starting to feel a bit down to the wire, with a few delays along the way… but we’re getting there 💪

Our office space is coming together nicely — it’s now fully insulated and lined, and the lights are in! We’re just waiting on the power points, light switches, and flooring to be completed.

We were expecting the chiller company to begin installation yesterday, but no sign of them just yet. Fingers crossed they’ll be on site soon. In the meantime, we’ve met with the flooring team, who are ready to go as soon as the space is dust-free — hopefully sometime next week!

A big thank you to our wonderful volunteer Lesley, who arranged for her plumber to disconnect our Zip from the Grenada North warehouse and reinstall it at Johnsonville — hugely appreciated 🙏

The kitchen is starting to take shape, with walls going up, while the landlord’s electricians are busy bringing everything up to code. The plumbers are also on site, working on the kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, and toilet connections. The amenities area is progressing well too, with wall linings going up and new lighting being installed.

Outside, demolition has moved along well, with all non-essential outbuildings now removed. Tomorrow, a digger will be on site to backfill and level the yard.

We’ve also have a site visit from Foodstuffs Transport tomorrow, who will be helping move our stock to our new home next week — exciting!

Looking ahead, we’ve got pest control visiting on Friday to plan placements, and over the weekend our racking system will be installed.

Lots happening, and while it’s a busy (and slightly stressful!) time, it’s amazing to see everything coming together step by step 😊

Our Story

Our 500 square meter warehouse is based in the food industry in Grenada North, Wellington. KCA is a distribution hub 1 stop shop for local foodbanks, schools, kindergartens, community groups who have a signed service contract to receive stock from us. KCA do not select the families to be assisted; this is done by our charity partners who distribute the produce and goods we supply to them. KCA rescues food from all supermarkets owned by Countdown and Foodstuffs North Island from Khandallah to Porirua, Aotea, Whitby and Parmeta. We also rescue food from local farmers markets, food manufacturing company Rosa Foods, Bidfresh, Turners and Growers, MG Marketing, Stonecold, Coq au Vin, UFG, Mr Apple (in Hawkes Bay), Goodman Fielder, Frucor, Whittaker’s Chocolates, Moore Wilson’s to name a few. We also ask our donors to donate their excess produce from their veggie gardens, or to purchase an extra item when at the supermarket. Our donors can also donate clothing, footwear, toys, childrens books, cds, dvds, household goods through to whiteware and furniture for families in need across the Greater Wellington region (Upper Hutt to Wellington City to Kapiti Coast). **Note we are not picking up furniture or whiteware at the moment. In the spirit of transparency, none of our volunteers are eligible or allowed to take any of the donated food or goods themselves. KCA guarantees that 100% of your donations go to the families that our charity partners assist for free. We do not sell anything that you donate to us.

So far in 2020, KCA has distributed nearly 300 tons of food out into the Greater Wellington community and nearly 2,500 banana boxes of non-food items such as clothing and shoes.
