💙 Police Remembrance Day 2026 💙

Today, on St Michael's Day, we pause to remember police officers who have died in the line of duty, and the serving, retired and former NZ Police staff who have passed away this past year.

Police staff across the country will wear the Remembrance Pin, a huia feather with the NZ Police chevron.

"Huia e! Huia tangata kotahi. He tōtara kua hinga."

The feather of the huia, for someone special. One dearly departed.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues who carry their memory. He waka eke noa. We are all in this together.

The National Police Remembrance Service from the Royal NZ Police College, Porirua, will be livestreamed today at 11am on the New Zealand Police and New Zealand Police Museum pages.

Lest we forget. 💙

⏰ Daylight Saving begins this Sunday 27 September 2026 at 2:00 am (clocks go forward 1 hour to 3:00 am) 🕒

Traditionally we all use daylight savings as a reminder to check that our smoke alarms are in good working order. This year, along with checking your own smoke alarms, we encourage you to LOOK OUT for your friends, family, and neighbours; REACH OUT to those who may need assistance checking their own alarms; and HELP OUT your neighbours to ensure everyone in your community is Firewise. 🔥

Head to Fire and Emergency NZ's website for tips and advice on smoke alarms and fire safety: https://www.fireandemergency.nz/mi_NZ/home-fire-safety/smoke-alarms/

🏘️ Kia ora e te whānau o Aotearoa!
Neighbourhood Support is proud to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
This year's theme is Ake, Ake, Ake – A Forever Language, with a focus on Te Reo Towns, celebrating the communities keeping te Reo Māori alive and thriving.

Just like a strong neighbourhood, a strong language grows through everyday connection such as a "kia ora" at the letterbox, a "ka pai" to a neighbour, a "haere mai" to someone new on the street.

Let's bring te Reo into our communities this week, and every week.
Kia kaha te Reo Māori!

This month is our theme is Mental Health & Wellbeing… Top of the list when it comes to good health and wellbeing is having mates we can rely on and being part of a supportive community.

Feeling connected to your community means you’re less likely to feel isolated, and more likely to have a support system in place when you go through hard times.

Farmstrong is an initiative to help farmers, growers and their families to cope with the ups and downs of farming by sharing things they can do to look after themselves and the people in their business. The great thing about it? They have a wide range of resources that can be used by anybody - whether you live on a farm or in the city.

One of those resources is their ‘Live well grow well’ book, with stories of lived-in experiences and tips and tools to wellbeing.

Tell us your top tip to wellbeing in the comments below to go in the draw to win a Farmstrong prize pack, including a ‘Live well grow well’ book, drink bottle and beanie! For bonus entries, tag your tribe and make sure to follow us and Farmstrong!

To celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori we're sharing some whakataukī (Māori proverbs) that relate to people and community and represent what Neighbourhood Support is all about! We have also included some simple words you can use to connect with your neighbours 🏘️

Kia haumaru, kia kaha, kia kotahi hoki ngā hapori.
Creating safe, resilient, and connected communities.

Vibrant and caring communities are vital for wellbeing 🫶 Feeling connected to your community means you’re less likely to feel isolated, and more likely to have a support system in place if you do go through hard times.

It also helps you sustain good mental wellbeing; people who feel a strong sense of belonging in their community are three times more likely to report very good or excellent mental health.

For the month of September, we want to come together to share ways to boost mental health and wellbeing. For example, if you know someone is struggling, see if you can get together and organise them a care package, or you could challenge your neighbours to a ‘sugar-free September’ (research shows links between reduced sugar intake and improved mental health), join or start a neighbourhood walking group, try out a new hobby, or simply chat with a neighbour or a friend; in the street, at the park, or at the school gate. 🫶

Ensuring we create and nurture meaningful connections and a sense of belonging
is important for combating loneliness, enjoying our lives (including work), and
improving our wellbeing.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re looking out for your own
wellbeing, and that of your community in the comments!
