Scouts Aotearoa

Scouts Aotearoa We empower young people through adventure and challenge to be ready for life. There is no other organisation quite like Scouts in Aotearoa.

Every year we help 16,000 young people in Aotearoa enjoy new adventures; to experience the outdoors; interact with others, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Working alongside our youth members are thousands of adult volunteers, with a huge variety of roles and opportunities available. There are four key cornerstones in the Scouts Movement, which are all realis

ed through an outdoor experience including; outdoors, community, personal development and new experiences. The programmes that we offer cater to the boys and girls development in the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental aspects of their lives in an appropriately safe environment where they are encouraged to be themselves, work together and thrive.

Mr Noel Walker and Mrs Sue Walker have been involved with Scouts for 50 years in Otago and Te Anau.

Mr and Mrs Walker have been co-directors of the Otago Gang Show since 1980, reviving the event from near closure and maintaining the biennial show’s reputation as a vibrant, professional community production until the present. The show involves more than 70 youth performers and more than 100 volunteers from the Otago and Southland regions. Noel has been Group Leader of Te Anau Scout Group since 1989 and Western Southland Scouts Zone Administrator since 2003. Sue has been Assistant Group Leader and Cub Leader of Te Anau Scout Group since 1989, and was Western Southland Scouts Zone Training Leader from 2003 to 2024. They both led the drive to build a $350,000 modern, fit-for-purpose Scout Facility for Te Anau, opened in 2016. Noel joined the New Zealand Scouts National Board in 2007 and was Chair from 2011 to 2015, leading implementation of a modern programme that continues to benefit Scouts across the country. Noel and Sue were involved with the Te Anau Kepler Challenge Mountain Run for 28 years, as founding committee members instrumental to organising the event from 1989 to 2000, and as race commentators from 1991 to 2015. Mr and Mrs Walker wrote the book ‘Calling them Home’ for the 25th anniversary of the event, which supports the local economy and supports distribution of around $20,000 to local charitable organisations annually.

🩷 It’s Pink Shirt Day! A day to spread aroha and kindness and end bullying. Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! It's okay to be different from others and it’s not okay to bully people because they are not the same as you. Here at Scouts we pride ourselves on creating safe inclusive spaces for all! We hope rangatahi in our Movement take Scouting values into their everyday lives and help stand up and speak out against bullying!

2026 is International Volunteer Year and with Volunteer Week fast approaching on 14-20 June we’re launching a brand new video competition! We know there are so many incredible people giving their time, energy, passion, patience and enthusiasm to our rangitahi! Please tell us about those wonderful people, highlight their amazing mahi and recognise their contribution to your community!
There’s 7x $200 Macpac vouchers to give away to the winners (who feature in the video) and a $100 Macpac voucher will go to the person who made the video about each of our winners.

The video needs to tell us about a great volunteer. What makes them great? How do they enrich the lives of those around them. Show us them doing what they do best, interview them, interview others about them - young people, other leaders etc. tell us why you appreciate them. 🥾 TrailJam - Explore your world! TrailJam is a Scouting event, where- on the 9th of May 1000's of pairs of Scouting feet around the world "hit the trail" together. 🌏 A day to remember we are part of a huge global Movement with adventure at its heart! Get together with local Groups and explore together or get out with your family and friends. The trail doesn't need to be in the wilderness, explore new parts of your city or a local beach. A fun event to get involved with regardless of your age, skill level, or time availability. Added bonus, there are two awesome badges available from Scouts Direct this year!
You can find the badges here: https://tinyurl.com/TrailJam
Check out the TrailJam Facebook event page and share what you are getting up to for TrailJam this year. https://www.facebook.com/share/18NEb61QGN/
Check with your Group to see if they have a TrailJam event organised or maybe somebody nearby has posted on the event page and you can join them!

Anzac Day 2026. There wouldn't be many services in Aotearoa that didn't have Kea, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers or Rovers at it! We are so proud of how well you represented us on Saturday! Thank you for showing up - for some it was dark and cold, some attended multiple services throughout the day and for all it was a sign of respect and honour to those who serve our country! Beautiful wreaths were crafted, many took on integral roles in services and Scouts was represented proudly. BRAVO.

Today we honour and pay our respects to those who have served and continue to serve our country. May we always remember their courage and commitment to freedom.
Many proud Scouts and Kaiārahi will be attending Anzac commemorations around the motu.
Please share images via messenger of the services you attend. We'll collate them together and share in the coming days. Please make sure you have permission of those in the photos.
