Sisters of Compassion - Ngā Whaea O Pūaroha

Sisters of Compassion - Ngā Whaea O Pūaroha Kia ora, bula vinaka, mālō e lelei, greetings! Welcome to our official page.

The Sisters of Compassion, also known as the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion, was founded by Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert at Hiruhārama Jerusalem on the banks of the Whanganui River on 14 October 1892. For more than a century, the Sisters have taught, nursed, and provided homes for children, the sick, and the elderly in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the South Pacific. The Sisters are committed to delivering 'compassionate care' throughout the community by providing meals, food, and basic needs to those who have very little, caring for the elderly, and providing individual and family support. The Sisters and the staff and volunteers they inspire provide compassionate care from four main locations:

- In Wellington City, the Compassion Centre includes the city's Compassion Soup Kitchen.

- In Island Bay, Our Lady's Home of Compassion is our congregation's main office as well as being a conference and retreat centre. It is also the Resting Place of Meri Hohepa Suzanne Aubert and home to the Suzanne Aubert Heritage Centre.

- In Upper Hutt and Levin, Compassion Housing provides houses for elderly people at a discounted rate. The Sisters also run the Chanel Home of Compassion in Fiji for the elderly and those with disabilities.

Over 500 people gathered with the Sisters of Compassion and the Bishops of Aotearoa to celebrate the National Centennial Mass for Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert at St Mary of the Angels church on Sunday.

The Mass marked the centenary of Meri Hōhepa’s death in October 1926, an event that drew thousands to St Mary of the Angels church and to Wellington’s streets to pay their respects.

Sister Margaret-Anne Mills welcomed the congregation, noting Venerable Meri Hōhepa’s “large-hearted neighbourliness and upholding the dignity of all people,” and her inspiring legacy that lives with us now and in the future.

Archbishop Paul Martin delivered the Homily, speaking about the practical compassion Suzanne Aubert brought to her work, particularly with the sick, the poor, women, children and Māori. Thanking the Sisters of Compassion, he said that for 134 years the Sisters have placed compassion at the heart of their mission and are the living embodiment of Meri Hōhepa's spirit. He reminded those gathered that they were there not only to remember her, but also to continue what she began.

Many with historic ties to Suzanne Aubert and the Sisters of Compassion travelled to Poneke for this occasion. Some had made a four-day He Haerenga Tapu/pilgrimage from as far away as Napier, Māhia, Wairoa, P**i P**i, and Palmerston North to the Chapel of Our Lady of Compassion in Island Bay for pōwhiri, before making their way to St Mary’s of the Angels in Boulcott Street.

We were pleased to see so many connections, and we thank Charles Ropitini, Deacon Danny Karatea-Goddard, Cardinal John Dew, First Secretary to the Nuncio, Father Tomasz Gdula, and the Bishops of Aotearoa for being with us on the day. ✨

Remembering Venerable Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert — 100 Years On

Today we mark a century since the death of Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert. Suzanne was both the founder of the Sisters of Compassion and one of Aotearoa’s greatest champions of the poor, the sick, and the forgotten.

On 5 October 1926, Wellington came to a standstill for her funeral — the largest ever held for a woman in New Zealand. Thousands lined the streets to honour a life defined by courage, service, and deep compassion.

Her legacy continues in acts of kindness, every welcome offered, every meal shared at the Compassion Soup Kitchen, and in the ongoing work of the Sisters of Compassion.

Please join us at the National Centennial Mass this Sunday at St Mary of the Angels.

✨E kore e mimiti te aroha — her compassion still flows.

FEAST OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL

Saint Vincent de Paul is remembered for his charity and compassion for the poor.

Like Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert, he recognised Christ in those who suffered, and he helped shape how we live Jesus’ teaching.

Born between 1576 and 1581 to a poor family in the southwest of France, Vincent studied theology from age 15. He was ordained in 1600 and initially pursued a comfortable life, but a profound encounter with a dying peasant changed his direction. From then, he dedicated himself to serving the poor through his mission and practical support.

In 1625 he founded the Congregation of Priests of the Mission to evangelise rural communities and encourage priestly vocations. Working with Saint Louise de Marillac, he later organised the Daughters of Charity in 1633 — the first women’s congregation focused on hands on service among the poor, sick, and imprisoned.

Under Louise’s leadership, donations were gathered, and Vincent distributed them widely: supporting abandoned children, caring for the elderly, and providing lodging and work for tens of thousands of people.

Saint Vincent de Paul died on 27 September 1660, a few months after Louise. He was canonised in 1737. His legacy inspired Blessed Frédéric Ozanam to found the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in 1835, continuing his mission of practical charity for those in need.

St Vincent de Paul, pray for us!
