Dapaanz - Addiction Practitioners Association of Aotearoa New Zealand Established in 2002, dapaanz represents the professional interests of the addiction workforce in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We foster ethical practice through workforce registration, accreditation and endorsement, and a robust CPD process. The Addiction Practitioners Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (dapaanz) are the professional association for people working in addiction treatment. We support and foster an excellent, ethical and culturally responsive addiction workforce that helps people struggling with addictions to get high quality, effective help. Dapaanz supports members by providing professional development opportunities, managing practitioner endorsement and registration, advocating on behalf of practitioners and clients, and ensuring ethics and competencies are upheld. Dapaanz is an incorporated society and a registered charity, affiliated to the Allied Mental Health and Addiction Group and a member of the NZ Drug Foundation.

Dapaanz is seeking three members to join our Board for a three-year term from December 2026. If this interests you, and you have prior governance and at least three years' organisational leadership experience, you can find out more about the elibility criteria and pre-election selection process at: https://dapaanz.org.nz/home/dapaanz-board-elections-2026/.

This term, the Board are particularly seeking candidates with strengths in the following areas:
- Legal and risk management experience in a governance context.
- Digital/technology experience and/or data security skills.
- Experience within the wider health system, particularly within policy or regulatory environments.

If you or someone you know would like a supported pathway into addiction practice, dapaanz is pleased to announce applications are now open for the first round of Earn-as-you-learn addiction practice internships.

Available in four locations initially, the internships offer paid employment, funded training towards a dapaanz-recognised clinical practice qualification, paid study leave, supervised practice, mentoring and structured learning supports.

We encourage applications from support and peer workers, culturally diverse and Kaupapa Māori workforce pathways, students part way through their studies and new entrants to the addiction workforce.

The voices of people who use drugs are important and could be impacted by this strategy - so we want to hear from you. Over the next few months, we'll be sharing a selection of keynote and concurrent session presentations from Cutting Edge 2025 on our website, with highlight extracts on our social media channels.

Today, we are sharing a gem from the Dr John Dobson Memorial Lecture keynote speaker Dr Glenn Colquhoun, poet, children's writer and GP based in Horowhenua.

In his keynote "Letters to Young People", Glenn affirmed our workforce and the tāngata whai ora we support with aroha, insight and gentle humour. We couldn't have wished for a better opening address. Ka nui te mihi Glenn!

Dapaanz is pleased to get started on developing a new earn-as-you-learn internship pathway to help grow the addiction workforce. Funded by Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, this paid and well-supported pathway to addiction clinical practice will initially be offered in four regions.

Applications are encouraged from new entrants to the addiction workforce, peer or support workers seeking to transition to practitioner roles, and kaimahi within Kaupapa Māori and culturally diverse workforce pathways.

Please get in touch if you are interested or if you know a suitable candidate for an internship in one of the designated regions.

We are also interested in hearing from service providers who may be interested in employing a paid intern or providing placement opportunities.
