Janet Law Charitable Trust The aim of the Janet Law Scholarship, administered by the Janet Law Charitable Trust, is to provide funding for an art student at The Learning Connexion.

This is an annual grant given to a current student, ideally enrolling in the Advanced Diploma. Janet Law, a former student at The Learning Connexion, was in her first year of the Advanced Diploma programme when she passed away in November 2010. Creativity made a huge difference in Janet’s life. Janet’s friends and family wanted to honour her by supporting a scholarship which would offer another st

udent the opportunity to engage with The Learning Connexion. The aim of the Janet Law Scholarship, which is administered by the Janet Law Charitable Trust, is to provide funding for an art student at The Learning Connexion. The Janet Law Scholarship is an annual grant given to a current student, ideally enrolling in the Advanced Diploma. Janet started her tertiary education as a dental student, then changed to and graduated as an accountant. However, in earlier years she had a connection and passion for artistic expression. It was only later in life that she managed to make the time to attend classes at The Learning Connexion and, from that, a suppressed part of her personality was able to emerge and grow. The focus of Janet’s artwork dealt with themes of cultural identity.

“My journey requires me to explore the world of Chinese history and culture; uncovering stories and poems behind symbols and ideologies that is the vast Chinese belief and tradition."

“While it is a part of my makeup and ethnic identity, I am unable to truly understand or regain something that I never had. For me it is a self-discovery in learning about my own family and part of that is to know the ‘Chinese’ in them. But each generation changes and will grow from where they are. Any information I acquire is not another piece in the puzzle, nor a light at the end of the tunnel, but a profound emotional feeling for me."

“It is a feeling of less self-conflict and more acceptance, of being less of a shadow and more human, a feeling of more strength, more understanding and being freed… and that is my story.”

"This painting is a manifestation of the destruction of a home; it is one of many houses torn down to make room for high density developments. This house in particular was a character home, a landmark of the 1900s, with a history and a soul, with abundant green space and many old trees. I felt a change when that house was abandoned, ransacked, torched and then eventually demolished, a quiet street had been wounded, and that wound influence further damage and loss to surrounding properties."

"These are two of my Rainbow Whanau. Alan Wendt was the former pianist and assistant musical director for the Glamaphones, Wellington’s Rainbow choir. And the support painting, Zoe Balfour is a dance teacher and was a powerful source of socialising me as a neophyte le***an. Both these people played a part in scaffolding and growing our community through the activities they lead, and through the examples of their lives. They have supported so many others through their work (Alan in signing for the deaf, Zoe in working with homelessness) and through their creative activities of music and dance. Painting folks who are prominent in my life and sense of self has been a deep and unexpected joy."

"In my jewellery work I have been fundraising for Doctors without Borders and other charities providing relief during the ongoing genocide in Gaza. I have been creating watermelon inspired
earrings and pins, selling them for donation to Palestine charities. These watermelons are made with vitreous enamel fired on copper and were very popular. The watermelon is a symbol used to represent Gaza and Palestinians, where often support for them is censored online and the symbol of the watermelon is used instead.

"I have continued hiking and photographing the night sky as much as possible and also made a solo trip to Iceland for a week where I was treated to many nights under the aurora borealis and a lot of amazing scenery."
