Meet Mike Walmsley. It started with a TV ad for volunteer drivers. Now Mike is a driver, a Relay for Life committee member, a Daffodil Day volunteer, and a fundraiser for the Cape Egmont Half Marathon. All for the Cancer Society in Taranaki.

"You couldn't find a more worthwhile cause," he says. "There wouldn't be a family out there which isn't impacted in one way or another."

Meet Hannah Soper. When she saw Cancer Society Southern were hosting a charity netball match, she didn't wait to be asked she got in touch and offered her skills as a photographer and videographer.

For Hannah, whose four grandparents have all been touched by cancer, it was personal. "Everyone I know knows someone who's been affected by cancer. That's why the work the Cancer Society does is so special."

If you've been thinking about putting your hand up, Hannah reckons there's no reason not to.

Meet Terry, Marie and Jocelyn. For them, volunteering runs in the family, all three volunteer with us on the Kāpiti Coast.

Between them they drive people to treatment, support reception, tend the garden, and take time to listen. They came to it separately, for their own reasons, but the motivation is the same. "The people you meet are always so amazingly positive," says Terry. "You take a lot of courage from them."

Meet Lesley Roy. Every Monday morning, she leads our Relaxation Group in South Canterbury and has done for five and a half years. Lesley came to volunteering naturally, growing up in a family where giving back was just part of life. But ask her what keeps her coming back and the answer is simple. "This group are my inspiration. They fill my cup."

Meet Campbell Brown. He retired expecting to take it easy but a few months in, he needed more. Now he spends three to four days a week driving people to and from cancer treatment at Waikato Hospital, and says he gets more out of it than the people he drives. "It's very rewarding. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much, but I do."

Do you donate to, volunteer with, or support Cancer Society in some way? We'd love to hear from you.

We're running a short research study to understand what motivates people to get involved with us, and what role our online presence plays in that. Your insights will directly shape how we show up digitally for our community.

Interviews take around 45 minutes and can be done in person or remotely. Spots are limited — and everyone who participates will receive a $50 Prezzy card as a small koha.

Bowel cancer is New Zealand's second biggest cause of cancer death. But if caught at an early stage, nearly 90% of people survive.

The stage at which it's found changes everything and that's why screening age matters.

This National Blood Donor Week, the need for blood and plasma donations has hit close to home for us at Cancer Society.

Two hours after making his 82nd donation, our Head of Cancer Services at Cancer Society Southern, Craig Watson, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He has just started treatment and the blood products he needs for transfusions and to get through chemotherapy come from people like you.

A donation takes as little as 60 minutes. Book your bloody important meeting at nzblood.co.nz
