This World Refugee Day, we’re excited to give you a first look at Tūrangawaewae, Our Place of Belonging.

In partnership with Immigration New Zealand, the New Zealand National Refugee Youth Council is proud to share the trailer for Tūrangawaewae, an innovative new multimedia platform that will soon help refugee youth better understand life in New Zealand before and after arrival.

For years, young people have told us that when they arrive in New Zealand, they often know very little about what life here actually looks like. While information is available for parents, many young people arrive without a clear understanding of their new communities, the opportunities available to them, or what everyday life as a young person in New Zealand might be like.

Our multimedia platform will feature videos, interviews, stories and practical information designed to help refugee youth better understand life in New Zealand. Young people will be able to explore all 13 refugee resettlement locations and experience them through the eyes of refugee youth already living in those regions

Our innovative approach places refugee youth at the centre of the story and represents a world first approach to refugee orientation and settlement support. We are proud to be one of the only refugee youth led organisations in the world.

This is just a first look at Tūrangawaewae, and we look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months.

A special thank you to everyone who has been involved in bringing this project to life so far, especially our Strategic Team, our Multimedia Lead, our Youth Engagement Lead, and the many refugee young people and team members who have contributed their ideas, experiences and passion to create something truly by refugee youth, for refugee youth.

🎉 Congratulations to our 18 young leaders who have graduated from the National Refugee Youth Leadership Programme 2024–2026 cohort!

It was wonderful to celebrate this milestone together and recognise the dedication, growth, and impact of these young leaders over the past two years. We were fortunate to have nine graduates join us in person for the ceremony. We missed those who were unable to travel or who have since moved to different parts of New Zealand, but they were very much part of the celebration.

The National Refugee Youth Leadership Programme is a recognised national leadership pathway for refugee-background youth who want to step into leadership roles and create positive change in their communities. Over two years, participants take part in a structured programme that helps them better understand themselves, strengthen their confidence and sense of belonging, develop leadership and advocacy skills, and gain the knowledge and experience needed to lead initiatives that matter to refugee youth.

Our National Refugee Youth Leadership Programme is By Refugee Youth, For Refugee Youth™. It is all about supporting refugee youth to find their voice, build confidence, and lead the change they want to see in their communities.

We celebrate the commitment, courage, leadership, and contribution of these young people to their communities and to Aotearoa.

We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you and look forward to seeing what you do next.

Thank you to New Zealand’s Children’s Commissioner for joining us in this special occasion.

We are excited to finally announce our National Strategy Team ✨🫱🏾‍🫲🏽💻🎥⛑️✨

Jenny being born in Aotearoa from first generation former refugees, Amor and Maritza growing up here after arriving very young, and Sigifredo being a freshly arrived former refugees from indigenous background, together they will be enhancing our National Youth Leaders Program as advocates for their colleagues, advisors for our over all training and pave the pathway we continue moving forward towards.

These amazing 4️⃣ - have shown initiative, truly contributed and displayed real leadership skills on the field, within their regions, nationwide and brought to light their idea, contributions and continuous projects that lay in their area of expertise.

After a year of amazing contributions Jenny, Amor and Maritza have moved to a third level of achievement within our National Youth Leaders Program. While Sigifredo will start growing his experience in Aotearoa with us, his prior experience in the field is so rare and special, he will be guiding us in his area of experience while we contribute to his growth in the new system he finds himself.

Our National Strategy Team is a demonstration of the value and skills our Refugee background Rangatahi bring to the table. We are only acknowledging their amazing achievements by ensuring a space that upholds their abilities, giving long overdue appreciation to the skills they have excelled to achieve in their journey as refugees, within Aotearoa and prior in their motherland.

This amazing team now leads the future of our organisation as experts that understand the true vision of our organisation and will support the continuous growth and enhancement of our program through all settlement regions.

Congratulations on your new milestone as Refugee Background Leaders! 🥳🎉
