🕊️ Survivors Gathering – Kapiti | 10am–2pm 🕊️

The Road Forward invite all survivors who were abused in state and faith-based care to join us for a day of kai, kōrero, and connection. 💙

🗓️ When: Saturday 8th of November 2025
📍 Where: Kapiti (Level 1 Coastlands Shopping centre)
🕙 Time: 10am – 2pm

Throughout the day, we will take a minute of silence every hour to honour and remember the survivors who are no longer with us.

Together, we’ll also create a banner dedicated to survivors – a space where you can add your own words, drawings, or symbols of strength and remembrance.

There will be kai, activities, and space for healing and reflection — more will be revealed on the day.

This time is for our survivors of state and faith-based abuse, but we welcome all survivors of sexual harm to come forward and spend this time with us.

Let’s gather, remember, and stand together. 💛

Consent matters, every single time. And it doesn't have to be complicated.

True consent is enthusiastic, unmistakable, and freely given. Anything less, like silence, uncertainty, or a “maybe”, means no.

It’s not just about hearing “yes”; it’s about recognising it too. Look for affirmative signals in both words and actions. A genuine “yes” often shows up as smiles, relaxed body language, eye contact, leaning in, or returning touch. On the other hand, a “no” might appear as discomfort, hesitation, avoiding eye contact, pulling away, freezing up, or staying silent.

Consent is an ongoing conversation. Check in regularly, pay close attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues, and always respect what your partner communicates, whether they say it out loud or not.

Tautoko Tāne is hosting a nationwide series of presentations for support agencies, service providers and professionals to share information and understandings about working with male survivors of sexual abuse, to help them get the support they need.

We’ve called the series Hoake Tātou | Walk With Me – a name that has been specifically chosen to reflect our philosophy – walking alongside our male survivors to support their healing journey in any way that we can, for as long as we are needed.

We know our Purposeful Peer Support philosophy works – we have the research to back it up.

And now we have the economic analysis to demonstrate our social impact as well, and its compelling.

Independent research led by economist Dame Suzanne Snively indicates that for every $1 invested in Tautoko Tāne support services, it delivers up to $5 in socio-economic returns.

On World Mental Health Day (10 October), we’re shining a light on the mental health of adult survivors of child sexual abuse. Whether you’re a survivor or someone who supports one, every step forward, big or small, makes a difference.

Here are some gentle reminders and tips:

💙 For Survivors:
1. Listen to your body. If you need to rest, rest.
2. Know that triggers are simply confirming the the abuse occured.
3. Talking about this is over to you: when, how much, and to whom - you’re in charge.

💙 For Supporters:
1. Ask your survivor what they need from you when they are sad.
2. When they are being triggered, tell them they are safe.
3. Your survivor is one of the most resilient people you will ever meet.

Through understanding, patience, support, and the creation of safe spaces, we can help survivors heal.
