Access and Impact: When Rights Meet Reality

A proposal to reroute part of the Tasman Great Taste Trail along a paper road has highlighted a familiar tension between public access and private land use. The route, following storm damage to an existing section, would pass through working farmland. Objections from affected landowners have focused on disruption to stock, operational difficulty, and safety concerns. At the same time, the route relies on land that is legally available for public use....

Environmental Policy: Several Shifts at Once

A series of recent announcements has brought environmental policy into sharper focus. A voluntary carbon market framework, changes to climate litigation, and a proposed overhaul of conservation management have all emerged within a short period. Each has been presented on its own terms, often with different objectives. Taken together, they point to a broader shift in how environmental decisions are structured....

Are we Shrinking Our Trout and Salmon?

Guest post by Rex N Gibson Are we shrinking our trout and salmon? The fish on the left = 1930s. On the right (ex. Fishing Mag) from Rakaia 1970 = 40 lbs Fishermen are usually accused of exaggerating the size of their catch. We may need to do more of that in the future. With the exception of the Mackenzie Country hydro canals our trout and salmon are reported (anecdotally anyway) as getting smaller than they were in our dads’, or grandads’, day....

When People Stop Turning Out to Vote

Election years bring renewed attention to participation, but also highlight a consistent pattern: many people choose not to vote. The reasons vary — disengagement, frustration, or a belief that one vote makes little difference. That may seem reasonable at an individual level, but taken together it produces a different outcome. Across a wide range of areas — conservation management, fisheries settings, access to land and water, public safety, and wider governance — decisions continue to be made....

From Stone Skimming to Something Larger

The first national stone skimming championships at Lake Hāwea drew a strong turnout, with competitors and spectators gathering for what is, at its core, a very simple activity. A flat stone, a calm surface, and a bit of technique are all that is required. The appeal is obvious. It is accessible, immediate, and requires little more than time and place....

Conservation Amendment Bill: Separating Concern from Structure

Public reaction to the proposed Conservation Amendment Bill has been swift and, in some cases, strongly worded. That is not unusual where changes affect land held in public trust. Conservation land carries both practical and symbolic value, and any suggestion of change will attract attention. The challenge is to separate immediate claims from the underlying structural issues that determine how the system will operate over time....

The Fish Was This Big – Honestly:

or Perception versus Reality Anyone who has spent time around recreational fishing will have heard the stories. The fish that was just a little larger last time it was mentioned, the one that nearly made the record books, or the one that got away but would have been the catch of the season. It is part of the culture, and always has been....

Retirement Isn’t What It Used to Be

By Andi Cockroft, chair, CORANZ I am 75, heading toward 76, and still working. Not because I have to in any immediate sense, but because the idea of simply stopping never quite made sense. Like many of my generation, I grew up with a model of life that was straightforward: work hard, reach 65, retire, and step away. That model no longer reflects reality, if it ever truly did....

When “DOC Science” Becomes a Single Narrative

Recent sponsored content from the Department of Conservation highlights the role of snapper in restoring kelp forests in the Hauraki Gulf. The ecological relationship is presented clearly: larger snapper consume kina, reducing grazing pressure and allowing kelp to recover. That linkage is well understood and supported. The broader issue sits in how that science is presented. What changes is not the validity of the relationship, but the way it is framed....

Deep Sea Mining: Decisions Held Back by Uncertainty

Recent reporting from the Cook Islands highlights a developing approach to deep sea mining that differs from many other resource debates. A long-term review of scientific data points to the potential for significant and lasting impacts on deep ocean ecosystems. The response has not been to accelerate activity, but to proceed cautiously within a structured regulatory framework. That approach reflects a broader issue....
