It is with sadness that we let you know that Pam Smith, a local conservation stalwart, passed away over the weekend.

Pam was a key supporter of the Tawatawa Reserve from the early 2000s and served for many years as the Reserve's Secretary. She volunteered regularly at the Reserve, clearing and planting, and was well-known for her friendly smile and her love of a good cup of tea.

She was a good friend to many other original members like Gona Pandian and Robert Logan, until Robert sadly disappeared in 2010.

Pam was also involved in the campaign to secure Paekawakawa Reserve, a great victory for the community, and she served as one of its Trustees. She also volunteered and advocated for many other local causes and peace issues.

Although Pam’s volunteer work receded in more recent years, she remained a regular sight at Bluebelle café and the Newtown Community Centre.
We’re grateful for the contribution Pam made to our Reserve and our thoughts are with her whānau and friends at this time.

We have lost two conservation champions in the last few days 😢

Pam Smith was a passionate member of Tawatawa Reserve - SEA: together with Robert Logan and Gona Pandian, Pam protested for the closure of the Ōwhiro Bay Quarry, planted many of the first trees at Tawatawa and along with many others helped to purchase the land that would become Paekawakawa Reserve.

Is has been heartening to see so many caring messages on the passing of another conservation trailblazer Annette Moffat. Annette supported many amazing causes in the area, and was a long time adopt-a-spotter at Tawatawa, looking after plants near Celia’s seat on the Bush track, and keeping the rats in check in the native tree nursery thanks to her beautiful Foxie Girl 🐶

Rest well wahine toa, the world is a better place thanks to your efforts 🙏

The Tawatawa Reserve - SEA team spent the afternoon with the Paekawakawa Reserve posse getting the last of their plants in for this planting season.

Lots of hard work has gone in realigning the walking tracks to give the ephemeral stream right-of-way, and battling the tradescantia.

Paekawakawa is looking awesome, and Nīkau palms in particular are thriving in the valley 💚
