What is the role of community in a challenging world?

We’re pleased to welcome Max Rashbrooke to Connecting for Change, where he’ll present: “Monopolies, bureaucracy, technology: the role of community in a challenging world.”

In an increasingly fractured world, public services, key consumer markets, and local communities are all under pressure. What would meaningful reform look like, and how might it help rebuild the conditions for stronger communities and human flourishing?

Based in Pōneke, Max is known for his incisive work on inequality, democracy, and public policy in Aotearoa. As the author of Government for the Public Good and Too Much Money, he brings a sharp perspective on the social and economic forces shaping our communities.

Connecting for Change, delivered in partnership with New Zealand Council Of Christian Social Services, brings together people from across the motu for two days of kōrero, connection, and collective thinking.

What became clear through 1 Sector, 6 Parties is that the community and voluntary sector must be part of the election conversation.

CNA Chair Holly Snape reflects on the significance of hosting the first 2026 election-focused political panel designed specifically for our sector, highlighting the strength of engagement, the importance of accessibility through livestreaming, and the need for ongoing dialogue with political representatives.

“Built by us, for us”

We’re thrilled to welcome Harlem-Cruz to the Connecting for Change Conference, taking place 28–29 July in Wellington.

A finalist for Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards, Harlem-Cruz has been recognised for her bold, grassroots approach to systems change and will be speaking on “Reimagining Systems Through Whānau-led Change.”

Of Ngāti Kahungunu, Kai Tahu, Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Hineuru, Harlem-Cruz is a kaupapa Māori leader, entrepreneur, and advocate for whānau-led development. She is the founder of Te Kōhanga Reo o Reremoana Ruruhira, Purotu, and Making Moves, initiatives focused on empowering whānau through personal development, employment pathways, and early childhood education.

Her work challenges us to think differently about leadership, community power, and what meaningful systems change can look like when it is built by us, for us.

Early bird registrations close at 5:00pm today, Friday 15th May!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for 1 Sector, 6 Parties Respond last night. It was a pleasure to host such an engaged and diverse audience, and we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback following the event.

The strength of our sector was truly on display throughout the evening, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the conversation and supported the kaupapa.

We do want to acknowledge that, due to time limitations, many attendees did not get the opportunity to ask their questions. One of the key messages from the panel was to keep engaging directly with political parties and candidates, and as we all know, that can sometimes feel easier said than done.

So, if there was something you wanted raised during the panel, we encourage you to get in touch with us directly. CNA will do our utmost to help knock on doors on your behalf and seek answers where we can.
