🚨 That loud alert from your phone tonight? Don’t panic — it’s only a test.

Kia ora Rotorua whānau,

Tonight, Sunday 14 June, between 6:00pm and 7:00pm, New Zealand’s annual Emergency Mobile Alert test will take place nationwide.

If your phone makes a loud noise and displays an emergency alert message, no action is required — it is simply a test to make sure the system works when we need it most.

For Neighbourhood Support Rotorua, this is also a good reminder to take a few minutes to check in on your own household and neighbourhood emergency plans:

✅ Do you know how you would contact your whānau in an emergency?
✅ Do you know who nearby may need extra support?
✅ Do you have torches, batteries, water, medication, pet supplies, and a grab bag ready?
✅ Do you know where to get trusted local updates?

Rotorua Lakes Council is now also using the Antenno app (logo attached) to share important local updates and community notices, including weather and emergency-related information. It’s another useful way to stay informed about what is happening in our district.

At NSR, we know that connected neighbourhoods are safer and stronger neighbourhoods. Emergencies can happen quickly, but neighbours who know each other and have a plan are better placed to respond, support one another, and stay safe.

📱 Tonight’s alert is only a test — but being prepared is always real.

Kia haumaru, kia kaha, kia kotahi hoki ngā hapori.
Stay safe, stay connected.

Today I visited one of our wonderful Neighbourhood Support Rotorua Street Contacts, who has been looking after her street for the past nine years.

She has done an amazing job keeping neighbours connected and informed over that time, but due to illness she is now finding it harder to keep carrying the role on her own.

We had a good chat and came up with a plan. The next step is to canvas her street, encourage more neighbours to join Neighbourhood Support, and look at getting signs up so everyone knows this is a connected street where neighbours look out for one another.

This is exactly what Neighbourhood Support is about — neighbours supporting neighbours, sharing the load, and making sure no one has to do it all on their own.

A big thank you to all our Street Contacts. You quietly do so much for your streets, and we really appreciate you.

🌟 GET INVOLVED THIS JUNE 🌟

Building a stronger community doesn't always require a big commitment. Sometimes it starts with simply knowing your neighbours, checking in on someone who lives alone, attending a community event, or lending a helping hand when it's needed.

This month's Neighbourhood Support New Zealand theme is "Get Involved" – a reminder that connected communities are safer, stronger, and more resilient.

At Neighbourhood Support Rotorua, it has been fantastic to see more people stepping forward to become Street Contacts and play an active role in strengthening their neighbourhoods. Every connection made helps build a safer and more resilient community.

I would also like to acknowledge our incredible committee. What began as a governance role has evolved into much more. Alongside their own families, work commitments, and community responsibilities, they have willingly stepped into operational roles to help Neighbourhood Support Rotorua grow and thrive. They do this entirely as volunteers, giving their time, skills, and energy to support our community, and for that I am extremely grateful.

Whether you become a Street Contact, volunteer at an event, learn emergency preparedness skills, or simply take the time to get to know your neighbours, every contribution makes a difference.

Together, we are building stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

🏡🚗 Heading away this King’s Birthday long weekend?

Before you go, take a few simple steps to help protect your home:
✔️ Lock all doors and windows
✔️ Use timer lights
✔️ Ask someone to clear your mail
✔️ Let a trusted neighbour know you’ll be away
✔️ Avoid posting travel updates on social media until you return home

And here’s a question worth thinking about…

🤔 If something happened to your home tomorrow, could you actually remember everything you own?

Long weekends are the perfect reminder to create a household inventory. Photos, serial numbers, receipts, and a simple checklist can make a huge difference for insurance and Police reports after a burglary, fire, or flood.

Neighbourhood Support New Zealand has a fantastic free Household Inventory Checklist available here:

💙 Supporting Our Young People — And Acknowledging Our Mums This Mother’s Day 💙

At last weekend’s Marae to Marae event, something stood out more than the running, the competition, or even the crowds.

It was our young people.

One young man partnering with my daughter was polite, respectful, encouraging, and simply a really good human being. The kind of rangatahi that reminds you there is a lot to feel hopeful about.

Sometimes it can feel like we only hear the negative stories about youth, but there are so many young people quietly doing good things — supporting others, showing respect, helping their communities, and growing into fine young adults.

Supporting our young people is not just the role of parents or schools. It belongs to all of us as a community.

And today, on Mother’s Day, it also feels important to acknowledge our Mums, Grandmothers, Aunties, and the many women helping guide and support our young people every single day.

The sideline cheering.
The listening.
The worrying.
The taxi driving.
The encouragement.
The unconditional love.

So much of what holds communities together happens quietly in homes, behind the scenes, and often without recognition.

To all the Mums and mother figures in our communities — thank you. 💙

At Neighbourhood Support Rotorua we believe strong communities are built when people feel connected, supported, and valued — especially our young people.

Happy Mother’s Day to all those supporting the next generation. 🌸

🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE SHARE WITH WHĀNAU 🚨

Even though this has been reported in Western Bay of Plenty, this sort of scam can easily make its way into Rotorua — so let’s stay one step ahead.

Police have made us aware of a very concerning phone scam where callers are pretending to be Police Officers.

☎️ How the scam works:
Scammers call from an unknown number claiming to be Police.
They sound convincing and may give details to “prove” who they are. Speaking personally — as someone older, I’d likely to listen if I believed it was Police. That’s why it’s so important we all understand how this scam works.

They then:
• Say they’re investigating fraudulent bank notes
• Ask you to withdraw cash from your bank
• Give you a script to use at the bank
• Request bank note serial numbers
• Arrange a courier to collect your money

👉 This is 100% a scam

❌ Let’s be clear:
New Zealand Police will NEVER:
• Ask you to withdraw money
• Ask for your bank details, PIN, or passwords
• Send a courier to collect cash

✅ What to do if you get a call like this:
• Hang up immediately
• Call 105 and ask Police to verify the officer
• Talk to a trusted friend or family member
• Trust your gut — if it feels off, it is

👵👴 Please check in on older whānau, neighbours, and friends
These scams are often targeting our more vulnerable community members.

📊 Since 1 April 2026, there have already been 12 reported cases in Western Bay of Plenty.

💬 Neighbourhood Support Rotorua Tip:
A real Police officer will never rush you, pressure you, or ask for money.
Take a moment, check it out, and protect yourself and your community.

🔥 Buying firewood in Rotorua? Read this first…

As the colder weather sets in, more of us are stocking up on firewood — but Police are warning about Facebook Marketplace scams doing the rounds.

🚨 People are paying for trailer loads of firewood… and nothing turns up.

It’s frustrating, it’s costly, and it’s happening more often than you’d think.

🛑 Before you hit “buy”, take a minute to check:

🪵 Profile check – Is the seller’s account new? That’s a red flag
🪵 Name match – Does the bank account match the seller’s name?
🪵 Don’t trust screenshots – Always check your own bank account
🪵 Meet smart – If picking up, choose a public place with CCTV
🪵 Too good to be true? It usually is

🤝 Looking out for each other

If something doesn’t feel right — pause, ask questions, or get a second opinion. A quick check can save a lot of hassle.

📞 Been caught out?

Report it to Police via 105 so others don’t fall into the same trap.

Let’s keep our community safe and scam-aware this winter, Rotorua 💙

🌟 Community in Action – Thank You Bunnings! 🌟

We’re absolutely thrilled to give a huge shout-out to Bunnings Warehouse for their incredible support of Neighbourhood Support Rotorua 💚

Thanks to their generosity, we now have all the tools we need to get our Neighbourhood Support signs up across our communities 🔨🪧

This might seem like a small thing—but it’s not.

Every sign that goes up is a signal that:
✔️ This is a connected neighbourhood
✔️ People look out for each other
✔️ Safety and community matter here

That’s powerful.

A special shout-out as well to Jeff, one of our awesome committee members, for helping drive this kaupapa forward and getting things happening on the ground 👏 You make a real difference!

Support like this helps us continue building safer, stronger, more connected neighbourhoods—and we couldn’t do it without businesses like Bunnings stepping in and backing local initiatives 🙌

If you see our signs going up around Rotorua, know that it’s a real team effort—community, volunteers, and local businesses all working together 💚

Ngā mihi nui, Bunnings – we truly appreciate your support!
