Yesterday, at Community Research’s 2026 Te Auaha Pito Mata Awards, Government House came alive in celebration of the contributions made by emerging community-led researchers.

The awards were presented by none other than Governor-General of New Zealand Dame Cindy Kiro. “Like you, I know that knowledge doesn't just exist within institutions. It also, most importantly, lives within our communities," she reflected in her speech. “By listening to these voices, and acting on what we hear, we can create a much more inclusive and equitable society in Aotearoa.”

The Awards shone a light on emerging researchers in the first 1–8 years of their careers. Together, recipients’ community-led mahi centered lived experience, uplifted positive change, and strengthened knowledge.

Our incredible 2026 winners were —
Pasifika Community Researcher: Joseph Tutonga Houghton
Tangata Whenua Community Researcher: Ria Te Uira Holmes
Ethnic Community Researcher: Taylor Le Cui崔乐
General Community Researcher: Corrina Thompson
Billie Award: Paula Ormsby
Billie Award: Atelaite Taupeavai Mapa

Thanks to AUT Faculty of Health and Environmental Science, Garth Nowland-Foreman and Kōtātā Insight for their support for these awards. Thanks also to Atawhai Tibble for being our MC!

Community Research are dedicated to upholding the mana, knowledge and contributions of community-led knowledge. Congratulations to all of our award winners!

Critical Tiriti Analysis (CTA) is a practical tool to strengthen Te Tiriti compliance within policy-making, planning and practice. It assesses how policies and institutional documents uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi, revealing how Crown and other agencies continue to privilege monocultural practice while limiting tino rangatiratanga and invites organisations to embrace genuine engagement with Te Tiriti.

“I didn’t even realise it was research that I was doing.” Joe Wilson’s video storytelling project, Lots of Little Fires, jointly won the Billie Award for strength-based research at the Te Auaha Pito Mata Awards in 2023. He tells us a little bit about the project itself, how it came about from his own lived experiences, and why it felt significant to have the project recognised as a body of community research.

Through intimate documentary-style interviews and filmography, Lots of Little Fires shares the lived experiences of inspirational people and kaupapa doing grassroots work to bring about equitable change in the community. Lots of Little Fires aims to uplift these voices to inform change and policy.
