Today, the Central Otago Environmental Society released a trailer for their video, which highlights how the fast-track Santana Minerals Gold Mine would decimate the local biodiversity, landscape, and heritage of the Dunstan Range.

A lot of history, local values, and whenua are now at risk.

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT: Harrison McEvoy (he/him) Running in Papanui (Subdivision of Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board)

I’m standing for Community Board in Papanui to bring positive, progressive, and sensible action to the table. I live, shop, and advocate locally, and have seen the diversity and potential our community has to offer.

I’m a high-school teacher, a local Residents’ Association chair, and have been a board director in a national charity. This decade’s worth of experience I have is how I plan to bring, and amplify, our community’s voice in the decision-making process.

Like most in Papanui, I’m concerned about the state and safety of our roads and footpaths, what happens to the rates we pay, and the future of our parks and our environment.

I believe in the Green Party kaupapa of enacting sensible, evidence-based, long-term solutions to these issues. I’m local, connected, and committed to Papanui. I’d love your support to keep our community the great place it is to live.

If elected:

* Advocating for repairs on footpaths and roads alongside improvements in safety
* Preserving and enhancing green spaces and road berm tree plantings
* Advocating for increased community and infrastructure investment in our community

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT: Jonty Carroll (he/him) Running in Albert-Eden Local Board (Auckland)

I am an animal lover and disability advocate. I was born and raised in Mount Eden. am standing for the Albert-Eden Local Board as a City Vision candidate because I love this area and my vision involves prioritising the interests of the people and the planet.

Over the years, I witnessed Mount Eden grow to become the centre of culture and history it is today. I can usually be spotted exploring local parks or shops. Walking my dogs up One Tree Hill is my favourite pastime.

I believe more investments must be made in our wonderful green spaces, to ensure our native trees are protected and preserved, and that recreation grounds are safe for everybody to enjoy.

I often feel underrepresented in local decision-making as a member of the disabled community. I have autism, which is stigmatised in society. Yet my disability in no way prevents me from being engaged in politics, so I want my campaign to challenge these preconceived notions about the autistic community. Have a conversation with me and give me a chance to change your mind.

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT: Caitlin Wilson (she/her) Running in Waitematā Local Board (Auckland)

Politics should reflect all people - but right now it doesn’t. Too many young people in Tāmaki Makaurau don’t see themselves in local government, and that needs to change.

I know politics can feel disconnected and confusing, like it’s not made for us - and honestly, it hasn’t been. But we can’t change a system we’re not part of. That’s why I’m running for the Waitematā Local Board this local election.

As a renter, worker, and recent grad, I’ve seen the challenges of housing, transport, and cost of living firsthand. I want to help build a Waitematā where people actually want to live, work, and stay - with affordable homes, vibrant public spaces, and affordable, reliable, and sustainable transport.

My name’s Elliot, I’m 24-years-old, and I just submitted my masters thesis in Ecology. I have been serving on the Otago Regional Council for the last three years. It’s been an honour representing the land, water, and people of the region.

I hope to continue fighting for:
A transparent council that listens to all of its communities
A public transport system that as many people as possible can rely on
A region that is prepared for natural hazards and the impacts of climate change (and that plays its role in mitigating the problem!)
& Robust environmental planning that protects biodiversity into the future, above short-term private profits.

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT: Connor Sharp (he/him) Running for Waitemāta Local Board (Auckland)

I love Tāmaki Makaurau. Our wonderful city – defined by her maunga, ridges and valleys and sparkling harbour – is a kete of many different people and cultures. My heart belongs in Waitematā, the centre of the city I call home. Like any community, we have urgent challenges that need real, tangible solutions.

I believe the best solutions are locally-led and need to involve all voices, especially rangatahi. And, as I’ve learned from my non-profit work advocating for greater cities and better transport, the answers to our current challenges can be surprisingly simple – as well as great for both people and planet.

Together with an energetic City Vision team, if I’m elected to the Waitematā Local Board, I aim to deliver the community-focused solutions we need so that everyone can flourish.

My priorities are:
More walkable and bikeable streets plus great public transport, so we all have affordable, safe, and intuitive choices for getting around.
Advocating for more homes to suit all kinds of households, close to where people work, shop, and play, with welcoming public spaces where we can meet and relax.
Connected and climate-resilient neighbourhoods, with green spaces to help soak up heavy rains, and urban ngāhere to cool our streets in summer.

CANDIDATE SPOTLIGHT: Rose Finnie (she/her) Running in Ōtepoti Dunedin

I’m fortunate to have grown up in Ōtepoti and I’m determined to help the city reach its potential to become a more liveable and resilient city, that everyone can enjoy, as well as future generations to come. I’ve decided to run, as I want to see positive action being taken to ensure the health of our people and our environment.

Growing up, I’ve always been told that I’m quiet, and I never used to imagine actually putting myself forward in such a public way. However, I’ve come to realise that leadership and governance isn’t always about being the loudest person in the room and that I have other qualities to offer. The core values that drive me are empathy, fairness, collaboration and a love of learning. I’m also a focused listener, level-headed, measured and considerate. Though I may be quiet, I can still stand firm in what I believe in.

As a Gen Z candidate, I’m also aware that students and young people make up a significant portion of our local population, yet are historically under-represented in local governance. I’m also running as I want to empower our youth to have their voices heard.  We need a council that is committed to working with and advocating for the interests of young people, who are our future!

If elected, I would aim to achieve:
* Reinstating the tertiary precinct planning group with student representation or explore creating a North East Valley or Student Community Board.
* Improve cycling and walking infrastructure including advocating for the Albany Street pedestrian and cycle link
* Developing a rental WOF inspection service to determine compliance with healthy homes standards, mitigating any potential tension between tenants and landlords.
* Establish an accessible and sustainable city plan through collaboration with community experts and local iwi.
