SENIOR SPEECH COMPETITION πŸ—£οΈ

Last week, five of our Senior School students presented insightful and thought-provoking speeches as part of the annual Scots Collegians Association Senior School Speech Competition.

Some of their speech topics included:
β€’ The complexities and quirks of the English language
β€’ Whether Shakespeare should still have a place in the classroom
β€’ The privilege of access to education and not taking it for granted
β€’ The state of democracy and the importance of preserving it
β€’ Inequality in New Zealand and the need for greater opportunities for all

Our finalists impressed the audience with their confidence, creativity, and ability to tackle challenging issues with maturity and conviction.

A special thank you to Scots Collegian Alex Heine-Sheldrake, who returned to judge the competition. With such a high calibre of speeches, selecting a winner was no easy task.

Congratulations to all five speakers for their outstanding efforts, and a special congratulations to Harry, who was named the winner of this year's competition. πŸ‘

UNDER THE SEA IN VR 🌊

Our Year 3 and 4 students recently stepped into the underwater world through an immersive virtual reality experience with BLAKE NZ-VR.

Exploring the theme "Threats to our Moana," students gained a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our oceans and the important role we all play in protecting them. Through the VR experience, they learned about:

🐟 The value of marine habitats and protected reserves
🌊 How pollution and overfishing affect ocean ecosystems
πŸ’™ The concept of kaitiakitanga and our responsibility as guardians of the natural environment

The experience brought classroom learning to life, encouraging thoughtful discussions and helping students see firsthand the impact humans can have on our marine environments.

DAY VS BOARDERS FOOTBALL ⚽

A traditional friendly rivalry was on full display at lunchtime today as our Day and Boarding students went head-to-head in a football match!

Everyone brought plenty of energy to the pitch, with both sides battling hard in a fast-paced match filled with great goals and impressive saves.

The Boarders came away with the win, taking the match 4–1, and earning some well-deserved bragging rights. But while the scoreboard may have favoured one side, the best part was seeing the camaraderie, sportsmanship, and College spirit on display from everyone involved.

With a crowd of students cheering from the sidelines and plenty of memorable moments throughout the game, this was a lunchtime fixture to remember.

YEAR 4 EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM🌿

Our Year 4 students spent three action-packed days at Palm Grove Community Camp in Paraparaumu this week for their annual Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) trip!

The adventure began at Ngā Manu Nature Reserve, where students explored native wildlife and had the opportunity to feed the eels. At Palm Grove, they embraced a range of activities including archery, shelter building, team challenges, scavenger hunts, and the ever-popular 90-metre slide.

Many students also chose to take on the optional forest hike and tyre hill climb each morning, showing determination and a willingness to challenge themselves.

Most importantly, camp provided opportunities for students to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, strengthen friendships, and create memories that will stay with them for years to come.
