Wellington Hospital’s emergency department has been operating under Code Red about half the time since March, rising to 84% in August.

Yet nurses say requests for extra staff are still being declined, even when the department is under extreme pressure!

On one recent day, the ED was 10 nurses short and overtime requests were declined.
Nurses are being left to choose between staying beyond their shifts to support their colleagues or going home knowing the department is understaffed.

This November vote for health.

Labour's announcement this afternoon is recognition of care and support workers, their unions, and everyone who has marched, rallied and refused to give up since pay equity was taken away.

Unions will keep pushing until every working person in New Zealand is respected, valued, and paid fairly.

NZNO welcomes Labour’s commitment to a $4 an hour pay rise for care and support workers from January 2027, around $160 a week before tax for an average full-time worker.

But care and support workers deserve their pay equity claim settled in full.
And we need a workable pay equity system for all workers, including nurses at Plunket and Hospice.

We’re calling on every political party to commit to investing in health, and paying the people who deliver it fairly.

NZNO is welcoming a commitment to restore pay equity protections and properly fund a settlement for care and support workers.

The Green Party has pledged to bring back the pay equity framework that was in place before the 2025 changes, make the Care and Support Workers claim a priority, and move quickly towards a settlement, with funding set aside to make it happen.

NZNO members stood alongside care and support workers from E tū and PSA at today’s announcement in Tāmaki Makaurau.

North Shore ED nurses have won the 25 FTE needed to safely staff their ED, a huge victory for NZNO members who organised, spoke out and refused to accept unsafe staffing.

This is proof that collective action works. But the fight for safe staffing and enforceable nurse-to-patient ratios isn’t over.

🎉 Join us tomorrow, 1 October, 11am–12pm at Takapuna Memorial Hall for speeches, cake and to celebrate what we’ve achieved so far.
