When we first started sharing fish heads here in Wellington, we never imagined we’d end up collecting aluminium cans for recycling to help pay the bills.

But we do what it takes. And here we are, well over 30,000 kilos later, thanks to the dozens of people and places contributing every week. People like Kiri from Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club, Scott from Vertex Scaffolding, Susie from Kaibosh and Hayden from Enviro NZ, along with the generosity of Phoenix Recycling Group who help turn it all into funding for the kaupapa.

Because of that support, we now continue to share enough kaimoana to create more than 500 family meals every week.

And more than anything, we continue to be blown away by what’s possible when people come together, value resources, and back one another for the collective wellbeing. Its’s amazing really.

How good is this?! CEO level commitment from Susie and her husband Sky, backing the kaupapa hard.

Crushed cans means maximum efficiency and maximum fundraising to help us keep the free fish heads flowing.

As Susie said, fundraising is real tough right now so every single can really does count. Even better crushed!

This is Neve.

We have a Cans for Kai bin in her workplace lunchroom and staff contribute their cans from the day and bring them in from home.

Because each bin full of cans helps us share enough kaimoana to create 4 family meals.

So every few weeks she gets in touch to let us know it’s full, then wheels it down right out to meet us. Extra mile with a smile, every time!

Ngā mihi sister, awesome alright.

This is what a usual Wednesday afternoon looks like out at Ōrongomai Marae. Willing hands around the table, preparing to share the treats. Beautiful manaakitanga.

This is Eddie. He’s the main man putting in work every week, to keep the kaimoana flowing from Moana New Zealand out to our local families.

We appreciate the brother not just for the Ika but the way he goes about making it happen. Big heart!

We can't say too much about this just yet, but we’re working on something special with the team at Dub Hub - Island Bay. Three months to go!

And the winner of our fundraising raffle is…

Our hearty thanks to everyone who brought a ticket over the last few months. The money raised will help us collect and share enough kaimoana to create over 600 family meals. Grateful!

And of course thanks to the incredible generosity of REDHOT Marine & RV for kicking this off, backed up by Capital Fishing, KP Marine and Rutherford & Bond and King Toyota. We appreciate you guys.

We’re keen to connect with more churches, community groups and people feeding the people.

Summer is nearly here and we'll soon be back out with our fish filleting kaupapa. That means we'll have a few more bulk loads of beautiful fresh heads, frames (and sometimes whole fish) to share around. It's not every week, maybe once or twice a month, but when its on its on and fresh as it comes.

We distribute this kai through a list of reliable people and partners who receive generous quantities (2 or more bins at a time), on weekends, to then share around or stock the freezers as they please.

If you are keen to be added to this list, please send us a message or email [email protected]
