Toi Māori Aotearoa

Toi Māori Aotearoa Established in 1996 as a Charitable Trust, we care for the interests of Māori art and artists. Toi Māori Aotearoa was established in 1996 as a Charitable Trust.

The trust emerged from the need for a collective Māori artists’ forum to foster the development of Māori art and support the national Māori art form committees. Since its inception, Toi Māori Aotearoa has focused on the development of Māori artists, Māori artist collectives and art forms, and initiates significant events to promote Māori art in New Zealand and internationally. Toi Māori Aotearoa continues to partner with organisations around Aotearoa and the world to benefit Māori artists and achieve the aspirations of iwi Māori.

“Toi Māori ki te kāinga, Toi Māori ki te ao”

Toi Māori Aotearoa supports the development of Māori artists at home and works with others to make potent and vital expressions of Māori art and culture on national and international stages. Learn more about our mahi on our website!

We were thrilled to attend the opening of Oho Mai – The Awakening, at Whirinaki Whare Taonga, a fabulous exhibition by three contemporary Māori artists who reside in Te Awakairangi ki Uta | Upper Hutt, including recent work by former Toi Māori General Manager, Garry Nicholas!

Oho Mai features exceptional raranga—kete whakairo, tātua, piupiu and whāriki—by Joanne Kahui, a range of drawings and kōwhaiwhai panel paintings derived from the moko practice of Stephen Thorpe, and an ensemble of carved characters – tekoteko, koruru, poupou—and figurative kōwhaiwhai by Garry Nicholas.

Intended as the first in a series of work promoting contemporary Māori artists living in that region, Oho Mai was the perfect complement to Darcy Nicholas’ outstanding retrospective, Land of my Ancestors (to 18 October), and Orongomai Tū Tonu, a wonderful exhibition celebrating 50 years of Kahukura, the whare tupuna of Orongomai marae (to 22 November 2026).

Congratulations to Whirinaki curator, Chriss Doherty-McGregor, our old friend and Māori Market stalwart, and her team, for presenting such a rich and stimulating programme – must see, highly recommended 😊
