We are still far from our goal and our deadline to raise the $200,000 needed to complete the final enclosures for 19 sick, injured, disabled and elderly unreleasable orangutans is rapidly approaching!

We must move them from our old to the new Nyaru Menteng Centre by 30 June. Don't let these remaining orangutans wait any longer–please give now!

Give urgently here:

Sadly, nearly all orangutans in our care were separated from their mothers at a very young age, most often because of the illegal wildlife trade, a process that frequently involves killing the mother to capture the infant.

However, maternal loss is not the only form of trauma our rehabilitant orangutans experience. Many individuals arrive after being kept illegally as pets or exploited in entertainment settings, where they may have been forced to perform, exposed to loud, unfamiliar environments, or subjected to "punishment" during training.

As much as we try to prepare them for life back in the wild, some suffer such severe psychological trauma that they are safer and more secure in an enclosed environment. Others suffer from chronic illness or are too old to live independently. It's 19 orangutans like this who urgently need your help now!

Discover what the BOS Foundation's Post-Release Monitoring team learned about Manggo and her baby, Melki, deep in Borneo's Bukit Batikap Protected Forest.

Observations of mother and infant orangutans provide crucial information about their daily activity patterns, diet, learning processes, and overall health in the wild.

These insights also help our team understand how orangutans adapt to their habitat, ensuring that the monitored individuals remain healthy and capable of surviving independently in the forest.

Eight years ago, we welcomed Monita to our Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.

At just 3 months old, Monita was confiscated from a villager who had found her near a palm oil plantation and taken her home as a pet.

He held the tiny infant captive for several days, dressing and bathing her like a human baby. This video shows her first days at our centre.

Today, Monita lives on a pre-release island, the final step in her rehabilitation journey before she can return home to the wild.

Monita is just one of many orangutans in our care who need your support to survive and thrive again. Please help us save them by adopting an orphaned orangutan today!

Happy World Environment Day!

World Environment Day 2026 focuses on climate change—on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back.

At BOS, we are working tirelessly not only to save the critically endangered Bornean orangutans but also to protect their habitats, such as vital peat-swamp forests.

Peatland ecosystems are among the largest carbon stores in the world. When they are wet, they retain water and store significant amounts of carbon. However, during dry periods, particularly during El Niño events, they become highly susceptible to fire.

The consequences of these fires can be long-lasting, including biodiversity loss and the release of large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Therefore, we implement preventive measures to maintain the balance of these ecosystems, combat climate change and protect vital peatland habitats.

Ten years ago, we welcomed tiny Mema to our Nyaru Menteng Rehabilitation Centre.

Mema arrived in a terrible state, a weak baby weighing just 2.3 kilograms. A local villager claimed to have found her while searching for firewood in a burned peat area. He took Mema to the village chief, who reported the find to the BOS team.

Today, she is thriving on Bangamat Pre-Release Island as she prepares for her permanent return to her rightful home in the heart of Borneo's rainforest.

Mema's success story is only possible thanks to the support of wonderful people like you! By adopting an orphan orangutan like Mema, you can become an orangutan warrior, too!
