Today we recognise World Environment Day, a reminder that caring for our environment also means caring for our wellbeing.

Spending time in nature, protecting green spaces, and making small sustainable choices can all support both our planet and our mental and physical health.

At the Wellington Brain Injury Association, we also see the value of accessible outdoor spaces—places where people can rest, recover, connect, and feel part of their community.

Every small action matters:
🌱 Reduce waste
🌿 Get outside when you can
💧 Care for shared spaces
🤝 Look after each other and the world we live in

Together, we can help create a healthier environment for everyone.

Assistive technology helps people do everyday things in ways that work for them, supporting independence, communication, learning, and participation in life.

From screen readers and speech-to-text, to mobility aids, hearing devices, and more, these tools can make a real difference in quality of life.

At the Wellington Brain Injury Association, we see how assistive technology can support people after brain injury, helping with memory, communication, fatigue management, and rebuilding independence.

Access to the right support should never depend on where you live or what you can afford.

Today we recognise the role of assistive technology in creating a more inclusive and accessible world for everyone.

Use the “Spoon Theory.”
Everyone starts the day with a limited amount of energy, or “spoons.”

For people living with brain injury, everyday tasks like concentrating, socialising, noise, appointments, or even getting dressed can use up spoons quickly.

Some days there are more spoons. Some days there are fewer.

Be kind to yourself.
Choose carefully where your energy goes.
Rest is not laziness, it’s part of recovery. 💚

“Fear is like water. When you stop fighting it and learn to move with it, you discover your strength.”

Nothing to Fear Day reminds us that courage is not about never being afraid; it’s about continuing forward even when things feel uncertain.

One step at a time. One wave at a time.

Children’s mental health is shaped by many factors, and for some, brain injury adds an additional layer that is often unseen or misunderstood.

After a brain injury, children and young people may experience changes in mood, behaviour, attention, fatigue, emotional regulation, or social connection. These changes are not “just behaviour”, they are often the result of how the brain is healing and adapting.

At Brain Injury Association Wellington, we see how important it is for families, schools, and communities to recognise these changes early and respond with understanding, patience, and the right support.

When we support a child with brain injury well, we are also protecting their mental health.

💡 Today is a reminder to:
• Look beyond behaviour and consider what might be going on underneath
• Understand that brain injury can affect emotional wellbeing and learning
• Support children with consistency, calm environments, and clear routines
• Encourage early access to specialist support when needed

💬 Every child deserves to feel safe, understood, and supported, especially when their brain is recovering or adapting.

Strong mental health starts with informed, compassionate support.
