Help make Mt Cook and Te Aro OMB Free 🌿

Keep an eye out and tell us if you see any old man's beard - see ombfree.nz/report.

We've already cleared 95% of known old man's beard in this area. Help us find and kill the remainder.

Old man's beard (OMB) is an invasive vine that smothers and kills native bush. It has thousands of seeds that are spread by wind.

OMB Free Wellington is a volunteer group.

Get in touch and we can:
* advise or control this invasive vine
* train you how to tackle it
* provide herbicide gel to kill the roots

We're making the most of some fine weather to tackle the OMB at the South end of the Terrace Tunnel this morning between 10 am and 2 pm. If you're not doing anything, come on down!

With a recent update to Field Maps, you'll need to reopen the map by typing "omb map" in the Search Maps box and selecting "CAMS Public OMB Map".

It's that time of year when we reset the status of old man's beard sites so that previously controlled sites are rechecked.

This year we're starting with 7.6% controlled - these are the sites under seedbank control that were reported as Dead within the last 2 years. We recheck these sites every two years

This is a great head start to clearing known OMB in Zone 2. Just 294 known OMB patches to clear now (plus the ones we don't know about 🔍).

We've got big plans for 2025-2026! Having *nearly* cleared Zone 1 of known Old Man's Beard, we're planning a challenging Zone 2 from Oriental Bay to Island Bay. And we'll continue supporting our awesome volunteers across the wider city to keep protecting our biodiversity 🌿
