Can you help? Got some left over retaining timber or posts looking for a home? We are in need of H4 200x50 retaining boards and H5 125x125 posts for retaining edges on our new track builds. We love a circular economy! DM us if you can help out.

PSA: Good news — Bail Out (and lower Leaping Lizard) is now back up and running, thanks to the help of the private landowner, Tim, who kindly moved tonnes of debris brought down the stream during the recent storm that had blocked access to the Karori Stream crossing.
In addition to Tim’s sterling work, our dedicated Thursday Maintenance Crew put the finishing touches on Bail Out by clearing the remaining silt from the approach to the stream.
Please note that the stream crossing has changed and may require more navigation skill than usual.
Bail Out crosses private land, so please stick to the marked track which is well signposted so no excuses not to, We don’t want to risk losing access — it is only through the generosity of the landowner that we are able to access South Karori Road from this end of the park.
Cheers Ranger Mark

Keen to get involved and lend a hand at track building at Mākara Peak? We have two new track projects on the go at the moment, both holding regular work parties on Sunday afternoons.

One project is a new grade 4 section of track in the south end of the park that will become a new way of getting to Leaping Lizard. The other is a new grade 5 trail (working name "Gnarleys") near the current Varleys track. The work parties usually start around 2.30pm and last for a couple of hours with refreshments provided at the end.

Check out the following maps for work site locations and come along if you are in the area or otherwise DM us and we can add you to WhatsApp groups to keep you up to date with activities. Some photos also of vollies hard at work and test riding Gnarleys.

Alas, the park was not completely spared from the wicked flooding Wellington experienced three weeks ago. A corner of the Kohanga o Porokapa next to Karori Stream at the south end was clobbered.
A wall of logs and branches smashed over 40m of fenceline and tonnes of silt built up against it all.
A big crew turned out yesterday to saw and dig the mess away, repair the fence, and save dozens of half-buried kahikatea and matai saplings. A massive thanks to Sarah B, Sam, Helen, Kerei, Keegan, Andrew & Jo, Phil, Ann & Tara, Ralph & Kirsten, Andy, Catherine & Isla, Evan, Pete, Karl and Simon (and Sarah G for help on the reconnaissance mission last weekend).

You may have noticed, or will do the next time you are in the park, that there are some changes afoot where the green shipping container was. The shipping container (used for storing the myriad of equipment needed to maintain the park) is being moved to a less public place and the space where it once sat will be repurposed into recreation space, including over time a new shelter and meeting hub.

In preparation, there will be some heavy machinery doing heavy machinery stuff, so please take care and follow all directions and warning signs.

If you have a company looking for an opportunity to support the park financially, we are interested in offering sponsorship opportunities for the new shelter and also the swing bridge. DM us if interested.
