🌿 Guest Speakers at the TRA AGM – 12 May 🌿

We’re delighted to have Ian Turk and Kena Duignan from the Ngaio Climate Crew joining us at this year’s AGM

NCC is a volunteer‑led group supporting practical climate action in Ngāio and Crofton Downs — bringing neighbours together, sharing know‑how, and backing local projects that reduce emissions and strengthen communities.

Ian and Kena will talk about what the Crew has been doing, what’s worked, and their vision for community‑driven climate action. Their session will start around 6:25pm, after the AGM formalities.

All welcome — come along, listen in, and join the conversation.

No matter your age, fairness matters. So why, when someone leaves a retirement village, can it take years to get their own money back?
As Consumer NZ highlights, there’s currently no law requiring villages to repay residents within a set timeframe. Payments can be delayed until a unit is re-licensed, leaving people out of pocket, under stress and struggling to fund care or move closer to whānau.
The Government is proposing a 12-monh repayment rule (for future residents only). Consumer NZ says that’s not good enough.
Consumer NZ is calling for a fairer approach, repayment within 3 months for all residents.
83% of Kiwis agree. Add your voice, sigh and share the petition. Goal 65,000 signatures by 20 May. Please sign and share Consumer NZ petition

No one should be left waiting for their own money. Join our fight for fast and fair repayment within three months.

The Thorndon Residents’ Association (TRA) has lodged submissions with Wellington City Council opposing the proposals to shorten the Variable Speed Limit zone near Queen Margaret College on Hobson Street to 60 metres at the northern end of the zone, and near St Mary’s College on Hawkstone Street (western end) to less than 75 metres. Waka Kotahi’s national guidance recommends a 150‑metre zone length for urban school areas, a standard widely adopted to ensure safer conditions for children and all road users.

You can read TRA submissions here: https://www.thorndon.org.nz/tra-submissions-to-wcc-variable-speed-limits-near-colleges/

Further information is available in Wellington City Council’s Safe Speed Limits Outside Schools project, which clearly confirms that a 150 metre minimum applies: https://wellington.govt.nz/your-council/projects/safe-speed-limits-outside-schools
