Feedback needed! Traffic sensors update below.

Please email [email protected] with your experiences and thoughts. The more details you can include the better, especially your bike type, age, tires, time of day, weather, etc... Your emails will be forwarded to WSP (the sensor designers), Upper Hutt City Council and stored by Motorcycle Collective for a future summary.

We had a full house at the Upper Hutt Bike Night session on Traffic Sensors last night. During that session we decided to set up an email address where you can send your experiences and thoughts on the sensors. WSP are very keen to understand why the sensors upset some bikes. During the event they received and took onboard a lot of feedback but we had so much to say that there was just too much for one person to remember, so emailing your thoughts is important.

Things we learned:
- They were not aware of the “air time” issue until now
- Sensors will be removed from some locations ASAP
- WSP want to work with motorcyclists to fix the problem and need our feedback & future cooperation.
- Expect further consultation soon.
- The sensors are tested for grip, wet & dry.
- The sensors can be both permenant and temporary.
- They are very fast to install and remove (seconds).
- In Silverstream area, they have been used to monitor if cars are respecting the lane markings at the roundabouts, which is partly why they were placed inside and very close to the intersections.
- They’re battery & solar powered.
- Each sensor has GPS and reports where it is installed so WSP is able to monitor if install guidelines are being respected.
- Installation is done by local roading contractors, not WSP.
- Data is visible to the org that requested the sensors (eg the council).
- Sensors need to go in the lane to avoid false readings from adjacent lanes.
- They detect vehicle type, speed and direction. No plates or ID are recorded.
- They detect up to 1.5m either side of the sensor (one lane width).

Huge shout out to Hell Pizza Upper Hutt for feeding us last night. What a bunch of legends! They have been supporting our community, so please go support their business too. Thanks to NZ Motorcycle Centre for staying open late and hosting the event.
