Who we are: Our tribe is Te whaanui a Mahanga (The greater family of Mahanga)
We are the original uri/decendents and occupiers from Shelly Bay (Marukaikuru). made a silent decision (December 2021) to end the occupation, we began occupying Mahanga bay, as we remain opposed to commercial development. On 30th June 2022, the police invaded and arrested us, bulldozing our kainga - just as they did to o
ur ancestors in Parihaka. Interests: As inviting landowners we ask, “What would you like to see as a community in the Peninsula?”
Maupuia holds significant cultural and spiritual value for both Maori and Pakeha. This whenua was once a military base during ‘the Russian scare’ before WWI. The first man to inhabit this place was Tara Ika son of Whatonga whom migrated from Tahiti to Matiu (Sommes) Island 950 years ago. At Mahanga bay, we resided on ‘te karu o te whenua’, which means, ‘the eye of the land’. This peninsula is a taniwha once named Whaataitai. As we stand in the eye of the beholder, we see beauty surrounding us; we see it needs protection. Our tikanga (lore) includes, ‘kaitiakitanga’ – taking care of the land, sea, and native wildlife, flora, and fauna. Our Peninsula is special, home to the world’s smallest penguin. For development to occur, many of these animals would lose their homes. We worked hard to build a sustainable kainga: having reduced waste by 90%, cleaning up and recycling rubbish from public areas, using 100% biodegradeable products, growing organic food, and applying permaculture techniques and ethos. Following the invasion, we moved around the Peninsula being harassed by police until bail conditions placed for unfounded charges (all charges were dropped). Forced to roam, we activated IROAM - Individual.Rights.of.Aotearoa.Movement. To follow our hikoi, check out our page www.facebook.com/IROAM.KIWI
