Expect traffic disruptions in area of Ghuznee Street during 5 to 27 January with road closures and diversions by Wellington City Council for street maintenance. Details below or on council website.

Big Ghuznee Street upgrades coming in January 2026!

Over three stages of work, we will complete essential maintenance, safety upgrades, and infrastructure improvements in a coordinated programme to minimise disruption across the city. And here is our to-do list:
๐Ÿšฆ Traffic signal upgrades
๐Ÿšง Pole replacements
๐Ÿ”Œ Electrical ducting and chamber installations
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Footpath remediation
๐Ÿฆฎ Accessibility improvements, including kerb ramp upgrades and tactile indicator installation (textured safety markers on the footpath).
๐Ÿš Bus stop road upgrades
๐ŸŒณ Tree trimming
๐Ÿ’ง Utility reinstatement
๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ Road trenching
๐Ÿงน General cleaning and graffiti removal

Key dates:
Stage 1: Monday 5 to Wednesday 7 January. Works will take place on the Cuba Street footpath only. There will be no impact on traffic.

Stage 2: Thursday 8 to Friday 16 January. Works will take place between Ghuznee Street and Marion Street. There will be no through-road and no right turn from Cuba Street.

Stage 3: Monday 19 to Tuesday 27 January. Works will take place between Ghuznee Street and Victoria Street. There will be no through-traffic and no left turn from Cuba Street.

Metlink buses, bus stops, taxi stands, and parking will be either relocated or closed for the duration of this work. For more details and updates, visit: https://wellington.govt.nz/your-council/projects/ghuznee-street-upgrade-works
