‼️ State of Emergency Declared as Massive Swells Threaten Wellington Coast ‼️
*8.39pm, Monday, 8 June

Wellington City Mayor Andrew Little has declared a State of Emergency for Wellington’s Southern and Eastern suburbs to support the response to the Heavy Swell Warning for Wellington’s South Coast. Please note the following advice from Wellington City Council.

WHAT WE KNOW
MetService has issued a Heavy Swell Warning for the South Coast between Ōwhiro Bay and Breaker Bay from 3am Tuesday 9 June and 9am Wednesday 10 June.

WHAT TO DO
We recommend that residents of South Coast waterfront properties and those who are concerned about flooding stay somewhere else tonight Monday 8 June. Residents of the South Coast can expect extensive road closures on Tuesday 9 June. We require those in affected areas including pets be out of properties no later than 9am on Tuesday 9 June.

A mandatory evacuation order will be in place from 9am tomorrow for waterfront properties in these Wellington south coast areas:

- Ōwhiro Bay
- Island Bay
- Houghton Bay
- Breaker Bay

Lyall Bay is NOT included in this evacuation order.

An Emergency Assistance Centre has been set up at Wellington South Baptist church, 284 The Parade will be open from 9pm Monday 8 June for those who don’t have a place to go tonight.

• Prepare a bag with essential items such as medications, important documents, personal items and clothing.
• Prepare to take pets and their supplies with you.
• Organise to stay with friends or family.
• Check on neighbours and anyone who may need help. Share this information if it does not delay you.

Please be aware that this is an emerging situation and information will be updated as it changes. For more details of the warning and the latest updates, visit the Wellington City Council website.

Stay safe out there people and please heed the warnings. Arohanui 💛

‼️📷 Storm in March 2006 - Please note this is an image created by The Dominion Post to depict similar sized swell from a storm that rocked Wellington in 2006.

On 3rd March the Picton to Wellington Interislander ferry, the Aratere, which was carrying 391 passengers, sailed into horrific conditions and was hit with waves of up to 14 metres in places and rolled over 50 degrees on two separate occasions in large ocean swells.

According to a Maritime New Zealand report, experienced crew thought the ship was about to capsize, which damaged railway wagons, cars, and injured passengers requiring two people to go to hospital.‼️

EKTA is launching a multicultural community choir — “The Sound of Us”. The choir aims to bring people together across cultures, faiths, ages, and backgrounds through music, friendship, and connection. The idea is for the group to perform non-religious songs of the various communities that now make up Wellington.

We are keen to encourage participation from Wellington’s diverse communities. No singing experience is needed, and everyone is welcome — from experienced singers to complete beginners.

The choir will meet weekly for 8 weeks, culminating in a community performance celebrating the diversity and talent of our wider community. Interested participants can register by filling The Sound Of Us Registration Form and emailing it to [email protected]

🌤️ Morning update | Wednesday 22 April, 9.30am

Mōrena Pōneke. The State of Emergency remains in place while the risk of further impacts continues. While the heaviest rain has passed, hazards remain. Please stay alert for slips and landslides, these can occur quickly and without warning, even after the rain has eased.

For the latest information, visit 👉www.wellington.govt.nz

Emergency services and response teams are actively working in affected areas, including supporting properties impacted by flooding and landslips, particularly in the southern suburbs. The Wellington City Emergency Operations Centre remains active and will continue operating for the duration of the emergency.

SOUTHERN LANDFILL
The Southern Landfill has been impacted by heavy rain and is open for commercial waste only. It is not open to the public for domestic waste disposal at this time.

This will be reviewed daily. We are working on options to support residents to safely dispose of storm-related waste and will provide an update in the coming days.

Kerbside rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal.

COUNCIL FACILITIES AND SERVICES
Most Council facilities and services are reopening today (Wednesday 22 April), including pools, recreation centres, libraries, and community centres.

The following remain closed:
📚 Island Bay Library (due to flood-related damage)
📖 Newlands Library and Community Centre (due to previous storm damage)
🥅 Grassed sports fields

Botanic Garden ki Paekākā and Ōtari Wilton’s Bush are open. However, we recommend avoiding the Town Belt and reserves while rangers assess tracks and clear debris.

For your safety, please do not self-deploy to help with clean-up efforts at this time.

👷Emergency services and response teams are actively working in affected areas.
⚠️ Conditions remain hazardous, including flooding, slips, debris and unstable structures.
🚒 Staying off the roads help keep routes clear for emergency responders.

We know many people are keen to help, thank you. There will be opportunities to support once it is safe to do so.

Our key messages remain the same:

✔️ Keep pets inside and livestock on higher ground.
✔️ Clear drains and gutters if safe to do so.
✔️ Check on neighbours who may need help.
