A beautiful reminder that small businesses are often about much more than what they sell.
Behind every local business is a story, a family, a risk taken, and years of hard work building something meaningful. Thank you to the team at The Polish Sausage Company for sharing this reflection 💙

The kitchen was closed. The lights were low, the benches wiped down, the last traces of smoke and spice still hanging in the air. Through the window, I noticed a couple standing outside, peering in with that familiar mix of curiosity and hope.
I unlocked the door anyway.

They stepped inside carefully, almost apologetically, and we started talking. Not about products or prices, but about where we come from, and why places like this matter. The woman grew quiet for a moment before telling me that I’d made her emotional. Her parents, she said, were continental migrants too. They had run a small artisan business of their own.

These little businesses are never just businesses. They are pieces of memory, fragments of another country carried across oceans and rebuilt by hand. They are long hours, stubborn pride, family recipes, and the need to make something real in a new place. They become like children to us — fragile, demanding, deeply loved.

In case you missed it — the latest OCR decision is back in the news, with ongoing discussion around what it means for homeowners and mortgage rates.

Also featured in the coverage was local broker Michael from Michael Anastasiadis, Mortgage Adviser at Bozinoff Mortgages Ltd, right here in our KRL community.

Another reminder that if you need advice or support navigating your mortgage in these uncertain times, there are good local people here to help 💙

A new flavour for KRL 💙

Welcome to Hyderabadi House, now open in Kilbirnie. “Hyderabadi” refers to the city of Hyderabad in India, famous for its rich spices, slow-cooked dishes and especially its legendary biryani — and yes, that’s the star of the menu here too 👀
From butter paneer and lamb rogan josh to family-pack biryanis made for sharing, there’s plenty to try. Definitely worth stopping in!

A beautiful reminder of the kindness and community spirit that exists quietly behind the scenes 💙 These handmade quilts, created by dedicated local volunteers including the Busy Bee Quilt Shopquilting group, wrapped up newborns and new mums in warmth this Mother’s Day across Wellington hospitals. Such a special initiative!

A local business opportunity in KRL 💙
After more than 50 years in education, Joy Hannah is ready to retire and is looking for the right person to take over the Kilbirnie Kip McGrath franchise. The centre has been part of the local education community for 10 years and has real potential for someone with fresh energy and enthusiasm. If this sounds like you — or someone you know — please help spread the word.
