Over the past few weeks we've had the awesome opportunity to take part in the Community Film Challenge organised by Volunteer Wellington Te Puna Tautoko 🎉

We were paired with volunteer filmmaker team, Wildflowers, and they created this stunning video to help us show everything that happens here at the community centre. A massive thank you to Michelle, Ross, Amber, Nedra and Ed for your help telling our story.

We're so lucky to have some wonderful volunteers who were keen to be interviewed and filmed for this project. Thank you all for taking part and your kind words about our cozy little community centre!

And huge shoutout to local legends, Newtown Rocksteady, for letting us use their music!

We're stoked that we won TWO awards for this video! Michelle won the WIFT NZ Female / Gender-Diverse Filmmaker award. And our video won the Empire Films Unfinished Story award for excellence in presenting a story that the judges want to hear more of. Next week we celebrate Te Wiki Kaumātua / Senior’s Week 🩵
We have a bunch of awesome events happening throughout the week.

Notably we have a NZ Radio Memories Quiz run by Wellington Timebank. Come along Tuesday 13th at 1.30pm for a chance to enjoy some music and share memories! Everyone is welcome!

Plus we have a bunch of our regular events happening like:
🩵 Tai Chi classes (Tuesdays and Fridays at 10am)
🩵 Steady As You Go - Fall Prevention classes (Tuesdays at 12pm)
🩵 Senior Social Drama (Thursdays at 10.30am)

And then our very own Kevin from Smart Newtown will be running a Digital Safety for Seniors workshop at Newtown Library on Friday 16th at 2pm.

Woo! Baz was one of our Free Soup Friday volunteers and it's so awesome to see him still doing awesome mahi in our community. Such a legend 🤩

Huuuge congratulations to Basil Wairau, one of our outstanding tenants who has won this month's Community Champion prize (a $100 voucher by New World Metro Willis Street! )

Basil was nominated by Ellie from Kaicycle Urban Farm and Composting, for his community mahi. Said Ellie, "Basil is a volunteer community gardener and bee expert - he's always getting kai to people in the community. He also volunteered making the soup at Free Soup Fridays for many years at the Newtown Community Centre!"

Congratulations Basil and thank you so much for all you do 💓

Tomorrow night! Newtown Rocksteady return to their old stomping ground!

"The band was born in 2007 from a regular open jam at Newtown Community Centre, and they’ve been keeping the neighbourhood moving ever since with their own warm, loose-limbed take on rocksteady, ska and reggae."
