Words from Jennifer Shennan: This photo needs to acknowledge the teaching by Liong Xi
(aka Richard Sie) of Balinese and also Laban-based modern dance in Auckland 1967 -- 1970. He was a remarkable teacher and performer, if a challenging personality. He had trained in Indonesia, then performed and taught widely in Europe. He migrated to New Zealand to work with John O'Shea at South Pacific Films. (The biography of Liong's exceptional life should be written but who would take that on?)

This image and more besides are held in the Keith Woods photo archive in Alexander Turnbull Library. We were by 1970 preparing for a North Island tour which culminated in a season at Downstage Theatre, back then in the Star Boating Club. Liong and I also conducted a seminar on dance across cultures at the invitation of Phillip Mann who was setting up the Theatre programme at Victoria University. We brought Srimati Amala Devi from the Paris Opera to teach us bharata natyam, classical Indian dance, and she also performed on our programme. Pioneering days indeed. Some progress in history I guess, but not a lot

Dawn Smart (Sanders) as a young dancer
"The arts are an integral part of all our lives", Dawn Sanders says.
The former Marlborough Girls' College student became a professional ballet dancer before an injury ended her career.
Now the head of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand, Sanders is still passionate about the arts, which she says affect everyone everyday.
