... diver safe.
Skipper Thelma reporting
We received an Urgent callout last night just after 9pm, to a missing diver at Goat Island marine reserve, reported by Police.
Although initial reports were concerning, we then received an update that the Police Eagle helicopter had located the diver, north of the island and that he was swimming on the surface, but not making any headway. Fortunately we could make good speed in a light Sou'wester, with the sea behind us, and made excellent time getting into the area, 15.5 NM from our base.
The Eagle was still on scene and with the diver flashing his torch we steered to his position. We boarded him via the stern ladder and the crew did a great job checking him over for hypothermia and exhaustion, however he was in remarkably good shape for the amount of time he'd been trying to get back to shore. He was well equipped and had a good, warm wetsuit.
We were able to confirm that all was OK with Ops and Police and returned him to his concerned friends, waiting at Leigh wharf.
From callout to arriving at Leigh wharf - 1hr 45mins.
Having the Eagle helicopter monitoring the diver's location was great, and Hibiscus Rescue 1 was also on the water, racing North, in case we needed backup for a prolonged search.
Our Ops room was also liaising with all assets, and we were able to confirm that an ambulance wasn't required. A great result and KR definitely doesn't have any cobwebs in the engine bay!
We had a more leisurely trip home, with Tractor Al waiting to retrieve us and help clean up. Home at midnight.
Thanks to crew 3, plus ring ins: Craig, Tim, Genn, Rob, Paul S & Tractor Al, plus all those folks in the Ops room & liaising with other agencies.
Cheers, Thelma
