LIONS KEEPING NZ WARM
Club Highlight: Riverton Lions Club

Before the firewood burns, the kindling gets it started.

For many years, Club of Riverton have been helping keep their community warm through a kindling project that has grown into one of the Club's most successful fundraisers.

Using timber rescued from old buildings, renovations and recycled pallets, a dedicated team of Lions carefully prepares and cuts the wood before gathering for regular "kindling cuts."

These working bees are a true team effort, with up to 15 members sitting around piles of timber, splitting, bagging and preparing kindling for sale. In just a couple of hours, more than 100 bags can be ready for local homes.

But like many Lions projects, it's about more than fundraising.

It's about friendship, teamwork and community. After the work is done, members gather for supper and enjoy the fellowship that has always been at the heart of Lions.

The finished bags are sold locally through Riverton's Hammer Hardware store, helping generate funds that can be returned to community projects throughout the region.

Because keeping New Zealand warm doesn't always start with a log.

Sometimes it starts with a handful of kindling.

Thank you, Riverton Lions Club, for helping keep New Zealand warm.

Not every act of service makes the news.

Some volunteers quietly deliver food.

Some stack firewood.

Some make phone calls.

Some simply show up when someone needs help.

Most never ask for recognition.

But communities are stronger because they are there to help..

This National Volunteer Week, we thank every volunteer whose kindness often goes unseen.

You matter.

LIONS KEEPING NZ WARM
Club Highlight: Ashburton County Lions Club

For 26 years, Ashburton County Lions have been helping keep their community warm โ€” one grocery bag at a time.

What started in 2000 with a handful of cars collecting food donations around town has grown into one of the region's most recognised community events: Toot for Tucker.

Today, the project covers Ashburton, Lake Hood and Hinds, bringing together volunteers, families, community groups and local businesses for one shared purpose โ€” helping ensure local foodbanks are well stocked for those who need them most.

Each year, around 400 banana boxes of non-perishable food are collected and distributed to local foodbanks in time for Christmas.

But Toot for Tucker is about more than food.

Army and Air Cadets, Guides, Rangers, Lions members and local families all roll up their sleeves to help collect, sort and pack donations. It's a true community effort that has strengthened local connections for more than two decades.

Because keeping New Zealand warm isn't always about firewood.

Sometimes it's about a full pantry.
A shared meal.
And knowing your community is there for you when you need it most.

Thank you, Lions Of Ashburton , for helping keep New Zealand warm.

Sometimes, volunteering takes an entire community.

Every year the Northland Citrus Drive brings together growers, schools, volunteers, transport providers and community groups, coordinated by the Whangarei Lions Club .

Thousands of kilograms of citrus are collected from the wider community's backyards and transported by Mainfreight to the South Island.

It's one of those projects that reminds us what happens when an ENTIRE community works together.

If you'd like to be involved, have citrus to donate or would like to join our Lions Clubs in their amazing projects, send us a message and we'll connect you!

Sometimes volunteering means making cheese rolls.

For the members of -Gore River Valley , it meant an extraordinary day of teamwork.

๐Ÿ’› 43 volunteers
๐Ÿ’› 384 volunteer hours
๐Ÿ’› 16,212 individual cheese rolls
๐Ÿ’› 600 loaves of bread

All made in a single day.

Behind every cheese roll sold is a volunteer giving their time to support local projects, community initiatives and people in need.

It's not just about making cheese rolls.

It's about neighbours helping neighbours.

This National Volunteer Week, we thank the volunteers who turn hard work into community impact.

Sometimes volunteering means making cheese rolls.
But it ALWAYS means making a difference.

Sometimes volunteering means helping a child see clearly.

Through the Nationwide Lions Eye Health Programme, volunteer screeners visit schools throughout New Zealand helping identify children who may need further eye assessments.

A few minutes of a volunteer's time can help detect vision issues that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Helping children learn.
Helping children thrive.

That's the power of volunteering.

LIONS KEEPING NZ WARM
Club Highlight: Makarewa Lions Club

When it comes to keeping Southland warm, Makarewa Lions don't do things by halves.

For around 30 years, firewood has been a cornerstone project for the Club, growing from modest beginnings into a large-scale operation powered entirely by dedicated volunteers.

Today, donated logs arrive by the truckload and are transformed into firewood through a carefully coordinated team effort. On a typical working day, members operate loaders, saws, splitters, conveyors and forklifts to process and deliver firewood to the local community.

One of the Club's biggest milestones came when they relocated their operation to Makarewa in 2014. With determination, teamwork and plenty of hard work, members established a purpose-built site capable of handling thousands of tonnes of timber over the years.

But this project is about much more than firewood.

The proceeds generated help fund local community initiatives, support organisations in need and ensure Makarewa Lions can continue making a positive difference throughout Southland.

From donated logs to warmer homes, every load of firewood represents countless volunteer hours and a commitment to serving others.

Thank you, Makarewa Lions Club, for helping keep New Zealand warm.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 14-20 June 2026

This week we celebrate the people behind the projects.

The volunteers serving sausages.
The volunteers screening children's eyesight.
The volunteers collecting fruit, stacking boxes, cooking meals, planting trees and helping neighbours.

Across New Zealand, Lions volunteers donate thousands of hours every year.
Not for recognition.
Simply because they care.

Thank you to every volunteer making a difference!

LIONS KEEPING NZ WARM

Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can create something extraordinary.

At the recent Lions District 202D Convention, every attendee received a crocheted square in their convention goodie bag. Members were invited to either keep their square as a memento or gift it back to become part of something bigger.

Many chose to gift theirs.

Those donated squares have since been lovingly joined together to create warm blankets, which will be distributed through local organisations to people in the community needing a little extra warmth this winter.

What began as a simple convention idea has grown into a project that perfectly captures the spirit of Lions.

One square.
Many hands.
Countless acts of kindness.

Because keeping New Zealand warm isn't always about firewood. Sometimes it's about stitching together community, generosity and care.
