An AI imagined view looking up the river.
Probably not this year but maybe one day the river might flow this clear... Not sure if the dolphin would ever jump that high in shallow water though! 😀

Here's another thing you don't see every day - a sewage treatment plant without any sewage! I'm guessing this means that they're already diverting sewage away from the old treatment plant and out to the new one. Hopefully with a view to soon be decommissioning the old one. OK, so this is not everyone's idea of the most exciting thing that's going on but I've waited for this moment for a long time 😁 Essentially this means that there won't be any more treated sewage going into the river (just the untreated stuff when it rains which is totally gross 🤢 but another story for another day) This treatment plant is super old, beyond capacity and I don't think it actually treated the sewage very well - the stuff coming out of it stank and a thick layer of sludge would form in parts of the river at times. And there's the fact that the tide didn't take it all out to sea... So I'm very pleased to see it out of action! 👍

Something you don't see everyday! A rocket nose cone. Built at Rocket Lab in Warkworth, being barged down the Awa to be loaded onto a ship, sent to America and blasted into space!! Or so I'm told. Kinda hard to believe but there you go 😁

🚨 New Threat Detected 🚨 Today I saw a turtle (presumed to be a red eared slider) in the Mahurangi River, above the weir by the bridge. I was actually giving a talk on threats to the Mahurangi just after and while it was a good illustration of what I was talking about, it's not something that I'm pleased to see!

🐢 Why Red-Eared Sliders Are a Problem in NZ
Invasive Status:
They are one of the 100 most invasive species globally, due to their wide diet and ability to spread.
Ecological Impact:
They consume native plants, fish, insects, and small birds, reducing water quality and potentially transmitting diseases.
Potential for Breeding:
While previously thought unlikely, breeding populations are now confirmed, and with warmer temperatures, they could become a self-sustaining problem. 😬

Auckland Council bio security have been notified.

We attended an awesome tree planting event last weekend. Planting over 500+ trees on the bank of the Mahurangi River. Many thanks to all involved! 🌱🌿

After a week with no rain, the Mahu is looking pretty good. You can see why they used to call it the Jade River.
