A Message from the KartSport Academy: Building a Culture of Support and Learning for our newest and youngest members.
At Kartsport New Zealand, especially in our youngest classes, we've seen an increase in complaints and angry behavior both between parents and towards drivers. This energy is often directed towards other young drivers, creating a negative environment that is disappointing for everyone involved. Instead of focusing on celebrating the hard work and dedication of our budding racers, we are inadvertently creating a culture that prioritises holding others back over lifting everyone up.
This has escalated to the point where we are receiving emails from parents targeting other young drivers—drivers who deserve their place in the field just as much as anyone else. We have also seen significant negativity directed toward our newer, more inexperienced drivers as they find their feet.
Why Competition is Vital for Young Driver Development:
True progress requires competition. For our youngest drivers to flourish, they need to encounter racers at various skill levels. Experiencing victories and setbacks alike is a crucial part of the learning process. These moments cultivate an understanding of the sport, including the intricate "minefield" of rules and regulations, that even adults struggle to get right all of the time. It’s important to remember that these challenges are not designed to discourage, but to push drivers to think critically, refine their techniques, and ultimately become more skilled competitors. Trying to remove other competitors won't help your child; it will only create an unrealistic and unhelpful environment.
Karting: A Challenging but Rewarding Sport:
Karting is inherently a difficult sport to enter. In the early stages of a young driver's journey, it is paramount that we all work together as a supportive community. Our goal should be to keep families engaged and excited about the sport, creating a welcoming environment that encourages continued participation. This collaboration is essential to retaining talent and ensuring the longevity of Kartsport in New Zealand.
Beyond the Track: Learning Valuable Life Lessons:
As your children grow and progress within the sport, they are not just developing their driving abilities. They are absorbing invaluable life lessons that shape them into better individuals. They learn the meaning of hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship. How we behave as parents – how we interact with officials, other families, and competitors – profoundly influences our children. They observe how we handle success and failure, and these observations form their own understanding of fairness, respect, and emotional intelligence. When we exhibit hostility or target other young children, we are teaching our own kids that this behavior is acceptable.
Success Requires Collaboration and Healthy Competition:
To find success in both motorsport and life, these young drivers will eventually need to work effectively with teammates and navigate complex competition. They will need to cultivate a resilient spirit and develop constructive ways to overcome obstacles. A negative and overly critical environment will only halt this crucial growth.
KSNZ and the Kartsport Academy: Committed to Supporting Every Driver:
KartSport New Zealand and the KartSport Academy remain dedicated to supporting all drivers, with a special emphasis on our young ones. We strive to provide resources, guidance, and a supportive network for families. Our core objective is to ensure that every young driver, regardless of their level of experience or current achievement, feels supported and empowered to enjoy the sport.
The Vital Role of the Cadet Class:
We want to highlight that the Cadet class in particular has faced challenges over the past few years, with a noticeable dip in participation numbers. However, the KartSport Academy has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to rebuild this foundation. We are thrilled to see that this hard work is starting to pay off, with many club days now boasting fantastic Cadet grids once again. We must continue this positive momentum. The Cadets of today are our Juniors in a few years and our senior stars of the future. This class is the lifeblood of our sport’s growth, and by supporting these youngest drivers, we are securing the long-term health and success of KartSport New Zealand.
Let us all try to create a positive track environment – one that embraces the learning opportunities that competition provides.
