Led by Mana Whenua, in the early hours of the morning, local rangatahi, contractors, club members, staff and board members attended proceedings to formalise the project starting(see photo below). Thanks to the funding support from Taranaki Electricity Trust and Toi Foundation the project will see the facilities at Whai Tapuwae Nล Rongo expanded to include 4 team changing rooms, 16 individual showers, 8 toilet facilities, storage space, accessible amenities, referee facilities and also a First Aid room.
The pavilion will seek to service the needs of the many clubs and organisations who utilise the current sporting facilities and amenities in the area, including the Waitara Bears Rugby League Club, Waitara Whanui Sports and Arts and the many netball clubs who utilise the undercover court space. Project Co Ordinator, Chad Williams from Beca will be overseeing the project, with Structa. as the main building Contractor. Chad feels lucky to be able to support a kaupapa in the place he calls home, creating another well deserved asset for the Waitara Community.
Board Chair, Tiri Porter is thankful for the collaborative approach all Founding Members of North Taranaki Sport and Recreation Incorporated have taken to see this project to fruition. It has been a team effort to ensure we have shared values, principles and objectives of this project- to see that it is a practical and functional building to meet the needs of the sporting and recreation community of Waitara and North Taranaki.
The project is looking to be completed in May 2027.

With construction now in full swing, there have been a few changes around Whai Tapuwae Nล Rongo.
Our transportable buildings have been relocated. This includes the portacom, which is temporarily located at the entrance to the covered courts from Princess Street. There is limited parking behind the building. If you do park there, please keep the accessway to the footpath clear for people using pushchairs, wheelchairs and scooters.
The construction site entrance is on Princess Street, opposite the Waitara High School bus stop. Please keep this driveway clear at all times.
We understand that the construction activity may attract curious onlookers. Youโre welcome to take an interest, but please stay outside all fenced areas for your safety. If youโre visiting Whai Tapuwae Nล Rongo between 7:30am and 3:30pm, please check in at the main office. To visit or book our facilities, contact North Taranaki Sport and Recreation Incorporated(NTSRINC) to make an appointment.
With more people and vehicles moving around the site, please drive carefully and watch for tamariki leaving childcare, high school students and other venue users. Use the correct carpark entrances and exits, and keep pedestrian crossings clear.
