Please check in on your neighbours, whānau, kaumatia and kuia.

We will be sharing updates as they become available.

It’s feels like a bit of a waiting game now 😮‍💨 With severe weather forecast tomorrow as Cyclone Vaianu moves towards New Zealand. If you haven’t already take some time today to check your kit and make a plan.

🚨Check your emergency kit:
Enough water and food for three days
Torch, radio and spare batteries
Fully charged phone and power bank
First aid and any essential medications
Warm clothes and blankets
Copies of important documents

🎒Have a grab bag ready:
In case you need to leave quickly, pack a bag with:
Clothing, snacks, water

Medications and personal items
ID and important documents

🏚️Think about your household:
Make a plan for where you would go if you needed to evacuate
Bring pets inside and make sure you have food for them too

This year Owae Marae are working in collaboration with Iwi, Hapū, local community groups and organisations, Taranaki Civil Defence Emergency Management (TCDEM), Waitara Community Board, Fire Service, Hato Hone St John plus others in the Community to better prepare ourselves in case of a civil defence emergency.

The first step we thought we would do is highlight the THREE civil defence welfare centres we have in Waitara. These are only activated when an emergency situation or event has been declared by TCDEM.

They are:
1. Owae Marae Whaitara
2. Knox Church Waitara, and
3. Whai tapuwae nō rongo, located at North Taranaki Sport and Recreation Incorporated (Princess Street).

Make sure you and your whānau are prepared. Check out what emergency supplies you need.

Kia ora whānau,

As the momentum continues to build, we are hosting another “Keep Māori Wards” event to inform and educate the community about the upcoming Māori wards referendum and a call to action for supporters who want to keep Māori wards.

Fun facts:
Wards are a form of representation based on need not race. ✅

Anyone could stand in a Māori ward, you don’t have to be Māori✅

No other ward is subject to a referendum, only the Māori ward. ✅

From 2002 to 2020, 24 councils across the country attempted to establish a Māori ward. Only two were successful. 22 councils failed due to a binding referendum. ✅

Since 1989, there has been a steady decline in voter turnout. However, since 2019 there has been a 22% increase in Māori participation and representation on councils due the removal of the binding referendum provision. ✅

42 councils across Aotearoa must hold a referendum on Māori wards. That’s over 50% of councils who will be directly impacted by the outcome of the referendum. If you want to learn more and support the kaupapa, naumai haere mai. The details are below:
