🌿Tihei Mauri Ora Programme – Week 6🌿
Maukaki Weaving & Taonga Creation
Guest Facilitators: Ramona Albert & Medina Koni
Week 6 of the Tihei Mauri Ora Programme was filled with creativity, laughter, cultural connection, and hands-on learning as our whānau from Ngāpuhi, Ramona Albert and Medina Koni, travelled down to share their knowledge and skills with our wāhine.
Together, the rōpū participated in a beautiful maukaki weaving workshop, where each wahine created her own handcrafted taonga necklace. The atmosphere in the room was vibrant and uplifting, with deep engagement, curiosity, encouragement, and continuous laughter shared throughout the session.
Session Focus: Weaving Connection Through Toi Māori
This week’s kaupapa centred around learning traditional weaving techniques while strengthening patience, focus, cultural identity, and whakawhanaungatanga.
Wāhine were introduced to:
The process of creating their own maukaki necklace
Traditional weaving methods including whatu stitch and aho
The importance of intention and presence within weaving practices
The cultural significance of creating taonga by hand
The workshop encouraged wāhine to slow down, trust the process, and take pride in learning something new together.
Participant Engagement & Energy
The room was filled with:
Genuine excitement and engagement
Shared laughter and encouragement
Strong connection and teamwork
Curiosity and eagerness to learn
Every wahine immersed herself in the experience, supporting one another through the learning process and celebrating each completed piece with pride.
There was a strong sense of accomplishment as each participant walked away wearing her own handmade taonga something created with her own hands, patience, and wairua.
Cultural & Emotional Impact
This session reinforced the healing power of toi Māori and the importance of reconnecting wāhine to traditional practices.
The creation of each maukaki necklace symbolised:
Connection to whakapapa and culture
Personal growth and resilience
Creativity and self-expression
The weaving together of stories, healing, and identity
Through the practice of weaving, wāhine were reminded that healing also happens through creating, learning, and sitting collectively in safe cultural spaces.
Acknowledgement
A heartfelt thank you to Ramona Albert and Medina Koni for travelling to support our kaupapa and for generously sharing your mātauranga, patience, and aroha with our wāhine.
Your guidance created a meaningful experience that our rōpū will carry with them long after the workshop ended.
Conclusion
Week 6 of the Tihei Mauri Ora Programme was a beautiful reflection of connection, creativity, and cultural healing.
Through weaving, laughter, and learning together, our wāhine strengthened not only practical skills, but also confidence, patience, and connection to their identity. Each taonga created today carries the story of resilience, sisterhood, and wahine reclaiming their mana through Te Ao Māori healing practices.
Tihei Mauri Ora.
