Police have laid the first charge under new stalking and harassment laws that came into effect yesterday, marking early use of strengthened powers to protect victims.

A 39-year-old man is due to appear in Auckland District Court today charged with stalking and harassment.

Acting Director of Prevention Inspector Natasha Allan says what we are seeing already is the prioritisation and pace that Police will bring to this type of offending.

“Police have used the new powers available to us to support victims and intervene earlier to prevent behaviour from escalating,” Inspector Allan says.

“This should send a clear message to both victims and offenders Police will be enforcing these laws.”

“We now have stronger tools to hold offenders to account, and we are and will be using them.

From today, stalking will officially be recognised as a criminal offence in Aotearoa.

This change matters because stalking is often minimised or misunderstood.
It’s not always one obvious act, but a pattern of behaviours that cause fear, distress, or a loss of safety.

Stalking can happen in person and through technology.
This might look like repeated unwanted contact, monitoring your movements, showing up uninvited, or using apps, social media, or shared accounts to keep track of you.

If someone’s behaviour is making you feel unsafe, watched, or unable to relax - that matters.

Trust your instincts.

If you think you might be experiencing stalking:
• Talk to someone you trust
• Keep a record of what’s happening
• Check your digital safety (devices, accounts, location sharing)
• Reach out for support

If you’re in immediate danger, call 111.

You deserve to feel safe online and offline.

At Family Action, we see every day how important kindness, inclusion, and standing up for others really is. Pink Shirt Day is a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported.
Bullying and harmful behaviour can have lasting impacts, but compassion, courage, and connection can make a difference too.
We’re proud to stand together against bullying and alongside those who may be struggling. Be kind. Check in on each other. Speak up.

When someone shares their experience of sexual harm, they are taking a huge risk.

They might be worried about not being believed.
About being blamed.
About what happens next.

Your response can make a real difference.

You don’t need to have all the answers. What matters most is that they feel heard, believed, and in control of what happens next.

Support starts with how we respond.
