From today, stalking will officially be recognised as a criminal offence in Aotearoa.
This change matters because stalking is often minimised or misunderstood.
It’s not always one obvious act, but a pattern of behaviours that cause fear, distress, or a loss of safety.
Stalking can happen in person and through technology.
This might look like repeated unwanted contact, monitoring your movements, showing up uninvited, or using apps, social media, or shared accounts to keep track of you.
If someone’s behaviour is making you feel unsafe, watched, or unable to relax - that matters.
Trust your instincts.
If you think you might be experiencing stalking:
• Talk to someone you trust
• Keep a record of what’s happening
• Check your digital safety (devices, accounts, location sharing)
• Reach out for support
If you’re in immediate danger, call 111.
You deserve to feel safe online and offline.
