Ark in the Park New Zealand

Ark in the Park New Zealand Welcome to Ark in the Park. Volunteers protecting the Waitākere Ranges - Te Wao Nui a Tiriwa We are an unfenced sanctuary protecting 2400ha.

Our vision is "From the ridges to the sea: restoration of the Waitākere Ranges to create a safe haven for native species which is rich and diverse, and is valued by present and future generations.”

Our aim is to achieve this by restoring functioning native ecosystems through pest control and reintroduction of native animals and plants lost from the Waitākere Ranges. Auckland Council’s possum cont

rol has allowed the forest vegetation to recover, but restoration of many of the “lost” species cannot happen unless we bring them back, and protect them with ongoing intensive pest control (especially for rats and mustelids). So far toutouwai/robin and kōkako have been successfully returned. Unlike many other “mainland island” projects, Ark in the Park does not have a predator proof fence – instead, ongoing pest control by our volunteers and neighbours keeps predator numbers low enough to allow survival and breeding of re-introduced as well as original native birds and other biodiversity.

Across the last few months, the Ark community has been very busy completing a pest control operation using bromadiolone bait in the upper northern section of the Ark.

92 of our awesome volunteers contributed 820 hours towards this operation! 1,253 bait stations were baited and then each subsequently visited three more times for top ups and remove stale bait.

This is a very impressive effort and we are most thankful to everyone who contributed to their time and skills to this operation.

While uptake of bait varied across different parts of the treated area, rat monitoring before and after each pulse showed a decrease in the residual tracking index (RTI) of rats by 68.75%!

This represents a great a step forward to reducing the number of rats in the Ark and giving all the wonderful native species in the Ark the best chance of success!

A big thanks to Auckland Council, Te Kawerau ā Maki, and Forest & Bird for their continued support.

One of the many joys our volunteers experience is encounters with native wildlife, such as this pīwakawaka fantail flitting joining one of our volunteers while they complete baiting in the Ark!

Thanks to Ethan Lu for this great picture while helping out with our recent bromadiolone pulse!

It was fantastic having the Auckland University Tramping Club come out and help complete line maintenance in the Ark recently!

Line maintenance involves making sure the Ark's bait lines are clearly marked and safe for our volunteers to navigate. This work is very important for ensuring pest control operations can be completed effectively and we are most grateful for AUTC's support!

Across the next few weeks, we continue our hard mahi baiting the upper Northern blocks of the Ark!

This work is pivotal to reducing the number of pests in the Ark, helping our native wildlife to thrive.
