Fรคeag Rotuแบกm Ta (the Rotuman language) belongs to the Western Fijian language group which is part of the Oceanic subgroup of Central Pacific languages. It is indigenous to Rotuma, a dependency of Fiji where it is a recognised language (although not an official language).
Rotuman is classified by the UNESCO as endangered due to a decline in speakers. Rotuman is considered by linguists to be an isolate, meaning a language with no close relatives. It is a very unique language which has been strongly influenced by Polynesian languages such as Samoan and Tongan, resulting in a number of
loanwords.
